Shinrin-yoku: Forest Bathing for Health

shinrin yoku Shinrin-yoku is alive and well today; the word has entered the Japanese lexicon. At present there are 44 locations approved as "forest therapy bases." These are sites that have been not only the subject of human research indicating benefits to stress physiology; a team of experts from the Japanese Forest Therapy Executive Committee ensures other criteria are met before designation, including accessibility, accommodation (if remote) cultural landmarks, historical sites,, variety of food choices, and comfort stations. Chiba University’s Miyazaki, who played a massive role in taking shinrin-yoku from a throwback marketing concept to credible preventive medicine intervention, continues to perform research and is now looking at the physiological effects of time spent in Tokyo's major urban parks.

Even in a hospital setting, a recent study of cardio-pulmonary patients (published in Clinical Rehabilitation in 2011) showed that patients who had an unobstructed view of nature self-reported higher levels of health. Additional studies, specifically in those recovering an appendectomy and randomly assigned to a room with a dozen small potted plants, the use of pain medications was significantly lower than that of their counterparts in rooms with no potted plants; they also had lower blood pressure and heart rate, and rated their pain to be much lower. As well, those who had plants in their rooms had comparatively higher energy levels, more positive thoughts, and lower levels of anxiety. Also, Norwegian research shows that having a plant at or within view of an office workstation significantly decreases the risk of sick leave. And, installing plants within a radiology department of a hospital reduced short-term sick leave by 60 percent.

Medical doctors, including Franklin B. Hough, reported in early U.S. medical journals that forests have a "cheerful and tranquilizing influence which they exert upon the mind, more especially when worn down by mental labor." Individuals report that forests are the perfect landscape to cultivate what are called transcendent experiences—these are unforgettable moments of extreme happiness, of attunement to that outside the self, and moments that are ultimately perceived as very important to the individual.

In 1982, the Forest Agency of the Japanese government premiered its shinrin-yoku plan. In Japanese shinrin means forest, and yoku, although it has several meanings, refers here to a "bathing, showering or basking in." More broadly, it is defined as "taking in, in all of our senses, the forest atmosphere." The program was established to encourage the populace to get out into nature, to literally bathe the mind and body in greenspace, and take advantage of public owned forest networks as a means of promoting health. Some 64 percent of Japan is occupied by forest, so there is ample opportunity to escape the megacities that dot its landscape.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: If you can't make it out to a local forest, park, greenspace, or greenhouse, and you're cut off from houseplants and flowers, use Clean Sweep to get you through the day. It de-stresses, and calms, as it neutralizes all forms of negative energies in the environment.

Yes, But Why Does Yoga Actually Work?

yoga We all know that yoga does a body (and a mind) good. But up until recently, no one could really say with any degree of certainty why—or even how—it improves conditions as varied as depression and anxiety, diabetes, chronic pain, and even epilepsy.

Now a group of researchers at Boston University School of Medicine believe they’ve discovered yoga’s secret. In an article published in the May 2012 issue of Medical Hypotheses journal under an impossibly long title, Chris Streeter, PhD, and her team hypothesize that yoga works by regulating the nervous system. And how does it do that? By increasing vagal tone—the body’s ability to successfully respond to stress.

Most of us don’t even know we have a vagus that needs toning, but we most certainly do. The vagus nerve, the largest cranial nerve in the body, starts at the base of the skull and wanders throughout the whole body, influencing the respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems. Often thought of as our "air traffic controller," the vagus nerve helps to regulate all our major bodily functions. Our breath, heart rate, and digestion—as well as our ability to take in, process, and make sense of our experiences—are all directly related to the vagus nerve.

We know when the vagus nerve is toned and functioning properly because we can feel it on different levels: Our digestion improves, our heart functions optimally, and our moods stabilize. Researchers hypothesize that it is vagal stimulation through yoga that improves these conditions.

To test their theory, the researchers investigated practices they believed would increase vagal tone. For example, they found that resistance breathing, such as ujjayi pranayama, increases the relaxation response, as well as heart rate variability (another marker of resilience). And a pilot study conducted on more experienced yogis showed that chanting Om out loud increased vagal tone and the relaxation response more than chanting it silently to oneself. Studies such as this one begin to reveal how different yogic practices impact human physiology in different ways.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Similar clinical trials were done by naturopaths using our E-1 Stress Relief Formula on PTSD and acute traumas. E-1 caused marked changes in the physiology and electrical characteristics of those tested; calming the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems immediately. Excellent to have on hand for first aid!

Clearest Evidence Yet: We're in a Giant Hologram

hologram In 1997, theoretical physicist Juan Maldacena proposed an audacious model of the Universe in which gravity arises from infinitesimally thin, vibrating strings could be reinterpreted in terms of well-established physics. Nothing has disproved this theory since, and last month, Yoshifumi Hyakutake of Ibaraki University in Japan, when running computational models of black holes, he discovered the computations matched Maldacena's. This, in effect, demonstrates two completely different models of the universe are consistent with one another. As one jumps further down the rabbit hole of what all this means, as Dr. R.C. Henry, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University, has, you come to some conclusions...

"A fundamental conclusion of the new physics also acknowledges that the observer creates the reality. As observers, we are personally involved with the creation of our own reality. Physicists are being forced to admit that the universe is a 'mental' construction. Pioneering physicist Sir James Jeans wrote: 'The stream of knowledge is heading toward a non-mechanical reality; the universe begins to look more like a great thought than like a great machine. Mind no longer appears to be an accidental intruder into the realm of matter, we ought rather hail it as the creator and governor of the realm of matter. Get over it, and accept the inarguable conclusion. The universe is immaterial-mental and spiritual.'"

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Wrapping ones' head around such concepts is one way to create awe in your life, which has been shown to be highly beneficial in many ways both emotionally and physically. Amplify this effect by using our Meditation Elixirs.

Asking & Receiving: What Could Go Wrong?

asking We've all had it drilled into our wooden little heads since we were wee ones: "Ask and you shall receive", and for many of us, the full meaning of that simple phrase has escaped our complete comprehension for most of our lives.

First of all, just asking does not imply that I'm ready to accept what comes as the result of the ask. "I've been asking and asking, and nothing is showing up", is a common lament (nowhere more common than in my own life I dare say).

"Well," says the lightly sarcastic voice of my guide, Marty, "Asking ain't receiving, buddy," in his best Robert DeNiro. "You have to be completely--and I mean completely willing to receive the result of what you're asking for."

Marty continues on, "What YOU do, is ask (a lot, by the way), and then when stuff starts showing up, the FIRST thing you do is judge it, come to a conclusion about its value, and then go back to asking. You see, the thing you asked for has just started to show up, and rather than welcome it into your life, you give it the third degree! No wonder stuff stops showing up--it's scared of you!"

Marty I have to admit I do catch myself doing that now and then, but now that Marty has made a bigger deal of it, I see that my critical nitpicking was like putting a giant fire-breathing dragon at the entrance of my life with a big sign, "Perish those who enter this way." Yikes.

"The other thing," Marty says, sighing, "You gotta see how what is showing up is exactly what you are asking for. Rather than criticizing what's showing, how about changing what you're asking? Huh, bub?" Ouch.

And this is where I can use some other assistance tools, such as "What else is possible in receiving what I'm asking for?" "What else can I ask for that more closely matches what I desire?" Or, if I really want to gain some revealing awareness, "What is the lie in what I'm asking for that keeps me from receiving it?"

I see Marty is giving me his thumbs up. "Okay, that's a good start. Now, what we need to look at is how you're being a big know-it-all." Uh, oh. I've been accused of that by a couple of ex-wives.

"Look, if what you know is causing you to want something other than what you have, then that something is not something you know about, capiche? You want something different, and then when it starts showing up, what do you do? 'Eh, that doesn't work,' or 'I already know that,' or 'I've seen that before.' Uh, news flash: NO, YOU HAVEN'T!" Marty is looking at me like my high school English teacher did when I tried to correct her and I was incorrect myself.

"Again, say you are looking for a new, different, bigger, better way to promote the business, and then, your cute little blonde neighbor comes over and starts talking about how good she is at social media, and your response is, 'Nah, that doesn't work for my business', then you're being a big, fat know it all. Maybe she is the exact person to tell you the answer to your question--being the messenger of the universe and all. And instead, you start shooting her down and dissing everything. Is it any wonder you aren't receiving when you do that?"

receiving Again, ouch. I'm seeing that when the universe sends an answer via a person and you interpret that what you are hearing from them is stuff you already "know", then you're not receiving what you asked for. Instead, pick their brain--find out what it is they know that you don't that is the answer to what you've been asking for.

"Bravo, mate!" Marty is chiming in with his best Australian. "Saying or thinking that you know something doesn't get you anything new. Being curious about what the hell you don't know is a much more fruitful path--in fact, it's pretty much the only path to discovery."

I'm nodding my head. Okay, this know-it-all nitpicker is choosing another way to be. I hereby proclaim to the Universe, I am ready--really ready--to receive! Join me, won't you?

A Human "Sixth Sense" Is Magnetic Fields

magnetic It's called magnetoreception, and it refers to the ability to perceive magnetic fields. Several animals use it to find their way over long distances by aligning themselves with the Earth’s magnetic field. Sea turtles. honeybees, spiny lobsters, dolphins, migratory birds, and more all have a magnetic compass which allows them to use the information that is coded into magnetic fields. According to Joe Kirschvink, the geophysicist at the California Institute of Technology who is currently testing humans for a magnetic sense, “it’s part of our evolutionary history. Magnetoreception may be the primal sense.”

A recent study published by Kirschvink in the journalNature Communications suggests that a protein in the human retina, when placed into fruit flies, has the ability to detect magnetic fields. The research claims that it can serve as a magneto sensor, but whether or not humans actually use it in this way is unknown.

The hypotheses of the researchers at the HeartMath Institute who have been studying the magnetic awareness phenomenon for over 10 years, are testing the following:

  • The Earth's magnetic field is a carrier of biologically relevant information that connects all living systems.
  • Every person affects this global information field.
  • Collective human consciousness affects the global information field. Therefore, large numbers of people creating heart-centered states of care, love and compassion will generate a more coherent field environment that can benefit others and help offset the current planetary discord and incoherence.
  • There is a feedback loop between human beings and Earth’s energetic/magnetic systems
  • The Earth has several sources of magnetic fields that affect us all. Two of them are the geomagnetic field that emanates from the core of the Earth and the fields that exist between Earth and the ionosphere. These fields surround the entire planet and act as protective shields blocking out the harmful effects of solar radiation, cosmic rays, sand, and other forms of space weather.

Further, researchers are postulating that human emotions and consciousness interact with and encode information into the geomagnetic field and this information is distributed globally. We are suggesting in essence that this encoded information is communicated nonlocally between people at a subconscious level, in effect linking all living systems. Magnetic fields act as carrier waves for this information, which can influence all living systems--positively or negatively--within the field environment as well as our collective consciousness.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: The negative effects of random EMF (electro-magnetic fields) is well-documented, and scientific research from quantum physics has come up with a solution. See our Vital Force EMF Transformers. The transformers change harmful EMF radiations into benign energy that actually benefits the body. New Study Shows Mind's Influence on Gene Expression

genes The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) scientist Dr. Garret Yount, along with collaborator Dr. Dawson Church, is doing a series of exciting experiments on the effects of Emotion Freedom Techniques (EFT) on biochemistry and gene expression. EFT is a noninvasive technique that uses elements of cognitive therapy and exposure therapy, and combines them with acupressure. It is one of several modalities that are considered “energy healing” techniques.

In their first study, Drs. Yount and Church looked at the effect of EFT on stress biochemistry, comparing cortisol levels in subjects who received either talk therapy, EFT, or rest. The results showed that anxiety and depression declined significantly more in the EFT group, while cortisol (a hormone indicating stress levels) also dropped significantly. This gave them the impetus to take their research to the next level and explore whether EFT can affect the expression of a panel of genes associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In a paper published last month Yount and Church share the the first evidence supporting this notion.

The results showed that PTSD symptoms declined significantly in the group treated with EFT, and after just 10 sessions of EFT all the veterans were free from clinically diagnosable PTSD. Additionally, when comparing gene expression levels (when a particular gene is activated or inhibited) before and after the intervention period, Drs. Yount and Church found significant differential expression of six genes, including activating immunity genes and inhibiting inflammation genes.

The next phase of this research will focus on exploring the mechanisms underlying these effects of EFT by analyzing molecules that control gene activation and inhibition in blood samples from veterans after EFT sessions. The ultimate goal is to understand how gene regulation is occurring and what links EFT to this regulation.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Similar clinical trials were done by naturopaths using our E-1 Stress Relief Formula on PTSD and acute traumas. When Things Go Bad...Just Laugh!

laughing Laughter is a naturally enjoyable feeling that brings about emotional benefits, but it also has a number of physical advantages as well, a psychologist says. Shilagh Mirgain, a UW Health psychologist, said laughing out loud every day is helpful for stress reduction, tension relief and boosting the immune system, as well as providing self-expression in connecting with others.

"When we laugh it releases those 'feel-good' hormones, like endorphins, that allows us to start to feel that sense of joy, and it can even temporarily reduce pain in that moment," she said. Mirgain said the release of those hormones lowers the reduction of other stress hormones, keeping the whole body system functioning more effectively. One of the largest benefits resulting from laughing is an increase in blood flow, which helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems and improves brain function.

Laughter also benefits a person's emotional well-being. Mirgain noted the brain has a negativity bias developed for survival reasons causing people to focus on those stressors of things that are wrong and need attention. This concentration of thought can sometimes leave one feeling hopeless or stuck on negative thoughts, but laughter can help counter that negativity and leave one feeling more resilient, Mirgain said. "When we’re laughing we just feel calmer and more balanced, and it can really help us promote that positive optimistic outlook." Strong medicine for the mind and body!

Are You Living A Story You're Not Aware Of?

blinders Lately I've been paying attention to what story I've been living. You'd think it would be obvious, just by looking around my life and noticing the patterns. But that doesn't account for habits of perception, and blind spots.

What I mean by "habits of perception" are packaged conclusions you've made that amount to pre-conceived ideas about the "way things are", or the "way things should be". These are judgments and points of view, that can be changed, provided enough mindfulness is employed.

These preconceived "lessons" we've "learned" from life can create blind spots of assumptions. For example, just today I spotted myself commenting, "Well, I better get busy, or I won't make any money this month." This gem is chock full of assumptions about how money comes to me, or "how the world works"--you gotta work hard to make money. We just sort of off-handedly live by these "rules", when they are based almost completely on incorrect conclusions made when we were much younger, and less wise. Yet, here we are, spouting these life rules without any critical thinking or regard to their veracity.

String enough of these rules together, and they form a narrative--a story of our life and how it unfolds for us. The thing is, it's based almost entirely on past conclusions, judgments and points of view. The fact that, in many cases, the story has been proven unworkable and sometimes miserable, doesn't seem to cause any introspection. Why? Because it's all tangled up in who and what we believe we are.

We've come to believe (because we've accepted certain things as "true"), for example, that "nothing comes easy for me." And, even when something DOES come easy, there is no alarm or red flag to tell us that our little story about how nothing comes easy has just been contradicted. Instead, we ignore that information. But when corroborating evidence that things don't come easy arrives, we are quick to jump on it as definitive evidence of the "truthiness" and consistency of our story.

reframe This selective awareness or filtering of evidence we use to justify our precious stories, is also the way we can change a story we do not want to live in anymore. Just as we ignored exceptions to the "rule" (that nothing comes easy, for example), we can now notice the exceptions and make THAT the evidence that our story is changing. Once we make ONE exception the rule, it all starts to shift. The trick is being able to SEE evidence contradicting our stories.

One way to increase mindfulness is by using gratitude. We are grateful for what we have, and grateful when things "come together" with ease and joy. Without gratitude, we would tend to simply overlook these moments of ease and joy because they contradict our ongoing narrative (that life never comes easy).

Another technique is to "re-frame"--where we re-contextualize what we are experiencing into a positive narrative. For example, when I'm in a hurry to get somewhere--I may be under some sort of deadline--and traffic seems so slow, and that street is blocked off for a festival, or there's a tree down in the road--I would immediately jump to this being evidence of how HARD things are, and nothing comes easy. Instead, by re-framing I become grateful for these slow drivers who are timing my travels so I won't get into an accident in my haste.

In these ways, we can get out in front of our story, and make whatever changes we choose about how the story unfolds.

A long time ago, my guru told me, "Do you know how to train a cat? You wait until it does something you want it to do, and then reward it." Life is much like that--it's flowing according to the story you're creating, and will immediately change course if you do. Change course with gratitude and re-framing.
