Dirt Literally Makes You Happy

happy dirt

Most ardent gardeners will concur that the act of gardening can reduce stress and improve your mood. When you think about it, there are obvious benefits from tending a garden. You're outside in the fresh air and Vitamin D producing sunshine (which helps regulate your serotonin levels), rather than being cooped up inside. But now science is proving through experiments that there are actual microorganism in the soil that affect our sense of wellbeing.

There are actual antidepressant microbes in soil. Mycobacterium vaccae is found in soil, and activates the release of brain serotonin. Serotonin and dopamine are two chemicals that boost our immune system and keep us happy. Both Dopamine and Serotonin are neurotransmitters, chemical messengers in the brain. Dopamine affects your emotions, movements and your sensations of pleasure and pain. In the brain, Serotonin regulates mood, social behaviour, libido, sleep, memory, and learning. Interestingly, 95% of our serotonin is manufactured in the intestines, not the brain; therefore some experts consider serotonin a hormone as well as a neurotransmitter. When you are gardening, M. vaccae is on your skin when you have your bare hands in the soil, you inhale it when you breathe, or it gets into your bloodstream through a little cut perhaps.

The effects of the soil bacteria were discovered accidently by oncologist Dr Mary O'Brien. She created a serum out of the M. vaccae bacteria and gave it to lung cancer patients to boost their immune system. She noticed that another effect of the serum was that the patients felt happier, more vital, and they suffered from less pain

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Healthy gut flora also keeps your body happy. Make sure your is replenished and fortified with our probiotic, Plantadophilus. This is a plant-based probiotic specifically designed for those with sensitive digestive tracts.

The Power of Group Meditation

Group Meditation A 2016 study published in SAGE Open found group practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM) was linked with decreased homicides and violent crime in the U.S during the 2007-2010 study period. Scientists theoretically predicted that the square root of 1% of the U.S. population (about 1,725 people) meditating together would create a nationwide positive effect.

From January 2007 through 2010 over 1,725 participants gathered to practice group Transcendental Meditation at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa.

Researchers found there was an 18.5% drop in violent crime nationwide at the end of the study. Statistical and independent analyses showed the rising trend of U.S. homicides during 2001-2006 was reversed during the 2007-2010 study period. Other variables were ruled out such as the economy, demographics, and law enforcement.

"I understand it's a new hypothesis in the social sciences that meditation could have a stress-reducing and coherence-creating effect in society," said lead author Dr. Michael Dillbeck in a news release. "But such research is increasingly suggesting that there's a field effect of consciousness. If you get a large enough group together practicing this technique to experience the field quality of consciousness, these extended ‘field-like' effects are expressed in society."

The Global Union of Scientists for Peace (GUSP) cites 23 scientific published studies showing TM practice by a subportion of the population can defuse societal stress, reduce associated violence, conflict, war and terrorism, and promote peace.

3 Lies You Probably Bought About Your Body

lies about body Lie number 1: Our bodies are unconsciousness objects that should bend to our will. What if your body IS actually conscious? What if it knows what is best for it? The idea that we should "have dominion" over our bodies springs from religious tenants that tell us we are far greater than our bodies, as well as the earth and the animal kingdom. Does that seem heavy or light to you? How much of a superior attitude do you have to take to believe that? Has that attitude ever worked for you? Once we actually acknowledge that our bodies are consciousness, all kinds of new possibilities open up. Partnering with our bodies, instead of trying to lord it over them, takes us from the place of antagonism to a space of cooperation. Can we over ride our bodies and their knowing? Absolutely, though the results are seldom what we think they should be and the results seldom last. What if you honored your body rather than exercised power over it? How much could that change for you?

Lie number 2: The experts know more than you do about how you should treat your body. Why should anyone know more about what's good for your body than you? Doesn't the idea of imposing someone else's regime on your body seem a little ludicrous? Most of us were taught early on that we can't trust ourselves to know what we know, and we should always trust the "experts". This insures that we will be able to be controlled, and that we will never step into the communion that's possible with our bodies. What if you were willing to begin to know what was true for you, which includes the capacity to communicate with and listen to your body? What if you became your own "expert"?

Lie number 3: Curing obesity, or other habits, requires will power. Willpower is a highly touted concept in this reality but let's take a closer look at what it actually entails. The idea implies that we should come to a decision, then impose it with what amounts to force, effort and violence on ourselves or our bodies. Notice there's no question in "willpower", nor is there any possibility of change. How well do you respond when someone tries to force something on you? If you're like most of us, forcing creates a huge amount of resistance and a kind of "to heck with you" attitude! Using will power also necessitates us overriding and cutting off our knowing, if it contradicts what we have already decided we should do. If you use will power in connection with your body, what are the chances your body is apt to do what you want it to do? Probably slim to none! All that will power does is to set up resistance and reaction and a battle. Are you willing to let go of will power in favor of question and knowing?

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Your body knows what's best. The key is to have a good, solid communication line with it. If your body prefers to be smaller and slimmer, use our remarkably effective Slenderiiz Program from Ariix.

Transcend the Reptilian Brain

fight or flight I'm pretty sure, that for most of us, when we observe animals, either wild in Nature, or in captivity at a zoo, we are struck with how instinctual they are, how "automatic" their responses are, and when a threat is perceived (whether there is an actual one or not), they either flee, or make a stand to fight.

We notice this in animals because we have the same mechanism brought to us by our ancient reptilian brain. Located at the base of the skull, this is the first part of the brain to develop, and is the oldest evolutionary part of the overall organ we call the brain. Every "knee-jerk reaction", or automatic, unthinking response we have to our perceived experiences has been expressed by the reptilian "fight or flight" brain.

What switches us over to that ancient part of our brain is stress. True stress creates automatic responses, feelings, impulses, urges, that are seemingly out of our control. This is by design, apparently, as it is hard-wired into our endocrine and nervous systems, and can cause a myriad of changes in our body--all with the purpose of fighting or getting out of the way.

fight or flight The thing is that although the body is hard-wired into the reptilian brain, it is not designed to remain in a fight-or-flight state. Constant stress, such as conflict in relationship, or at our jobs, or in active military combat, wears down the body's ability to repair itself, and makes it susceptible to disease and breakdown.

"To transcend those physical limitations (of the reptilian brain), we must find within ourselves that place that is not limited, not physical--which is not programmed in reaction-response that keeps us in fight or flight. In order to transcend that, we want to transcend the reptilian brain, which is the hindbrain, the oldest brain--which is programmed to respond to fear, pain, negative expectations, sense of loss, betrayal, anger--survival-based programs. When we can transcend the limitations of our survival-based programming, we can begin to expand our consciousness beyond the expectations set, and still achieve our dreams. To achieve our dreams it is helpful to let go of the need for them to show up in a certain way." --Dr. Richard Bartlett, Matrix Energetics

Finding that "clear space", that space of no thought that finds us floating in a sea of enfolding love and support, is the skill of transcendence. It is also the space of repair and healing after the reptilian brain has "blown out the energetic fuses" of the body, leaving it weak and exhausted. Bodies were never intended to live exclusively on adrenalin and cortisol, and when they are forced to, misalignment, dysfunction, disease and early death follow.

It is imperative, therefore, to find that transcendent place. The comforting part is that it is always available to us--always there waiting to enfold us in loving warmth. Call it angelic, god, higher self--this place is within all of us, yet we tend to discount its value. The stresses of our experiences seem so real, so immediate, so demanding of action, that we forget the damage prolonged exposure to that reptilian state causes.

inner peace It is absolutely vital and required that we do everything we can to re-access our inner transcendent place when we become aware of stress responses. This allows the body to recover from the nitro-endocrine chemicals that act like jet fuel throughout the body, burning up reserves at a severe cost.

Establish a time during the day or night when you can sit in silence and comfort and access that inner peace place. It usually takes some time to get there, depending on stress levels, but know that the more often this peaceful state is accessed, the faster and more easily it shows up--just like any skill--the more you use it, the more accessible it is.

Find out what your personal "gateway" to this state is, whether it be through meditation, music, breathing, bathing, or all. Your body will thank you, and that stressful life you keep living will start to become less and less stressful.

Deepak Chopra's List of Top 8 Mind-Body Breakthroughs

Deepak Chopra

Since Deepak began advocating the mind-body connection thirty years ago, a time of great opposition among physicians to the very notion that thoughts have physical consequences, the trend has been entirely against the physicalist position, i.e., that the human body is a machine that needs fixing when it gets broken. One research after another has validated what should have been obvious in the first place: mind and body are too intimately related to be seen as separate entities.

Several principles can be listed that are backed by the best science, and yet which have had minimal impact in a doctor's daily practice.

  • Every cell is in some form of communication with the brain, either directly or indirectly, is receiving messages triggered by all of our thoughts, feelings, moods, expectations, and beliefs.
  • Experience gets transformed and metabolized, exactly as food, toxins, pollutants, air, and water get metabolized. In a word, if you want to see what your experiences were like yesterday, look at your body today. If you want to see what your body will be like tomorrow, look at your experiences today.
  • The body is a verb, not a noun. In other words, it's a continuous unbroken process.
  • Cells are born and die; atoms and molecules fly in and out of each cell constantly. Yet despite this constant flux, the blueprint of the cell remains intact. This blueprint is invisible, intelligent, dynamic, and self-organizing.
  • Lifestyle choices make the dominant difference between wellness and chronic illness. Years, sometimes decades before symptoms appear, cells can be gaining negative input that lead to the onset of disease.
  • Our genes are dynamic and respond to everyday experiences and lifestyle choices. Habits lead to longer term changes in the programming of our gene expression via “epigenetics”, as explained in our book “Super Genes”.
  • If we knew the pivot point that creates positive cellular activity out of positive experiences, a state of radical well-being is possible.
  • Purely mental practices, especially meditation, have been shown over and over to improve various physical functions, and these improvements are now known to extend all the way down to gene activity.

We choose to celebrate the victory of the mind-body perspective. But, it will take a fusion of psychology, genetics research, brain studies, and wisdom from the world's healing traditions to actually break though to a practical kind of qualia medicine. The challenge is clear, and so is the positive trend toward solving it. On this basis, the possibility of radical well-being exists here and now, with every hope that it will expand into an unlimited future.

Is Society Failing to Develop its New Spiritual Leaders?

Dalai Llama Leonard Perlmutter, philosopher, author and founder of The American Meditation Institute (AMI), called the mass shooting at an LGBT Orlando nightclub a "clarion call for the nation's educators to incorporate meditation and its allied disciplines into every level of education––from grade school to graduate school."

Perlmutter said, "Today, meditation can emspower us all to transform the consciousness of fear and anger into understanding and compassion. Daily meditation can provide the blueprint, resources and inspiration to explore beyond the boundaries of habitual thinking, feeling and unexamined reasoning. All the answers to the questions, ‘What is to be done and what is not to be done,' are waiting for each of us in the silence of meditation. Unless we can consciously know and examine the silent space between thoughts, we will never be able to think clearly enough to resolve our most pressing problems.

"Our educational system does a fine job training skilled workers," Perlmutter noted, "yet it isn't training the kind of philosophers and sages who once helped guide humanity. Those intuitive leaders have too often been replaced by well-intentioned, but parochially-minded individuals whose limited perspectives only assure that the blind of one generation will continue to lead the blind of the next generation."

Then he concluded, "Meditation for every woman, man and child––regardless of their religious beliefs––is not simply a good idea, it's a dire necessity. I call upon our nation's local and state boards of education as well as the boards of directors at every American college and university to incorporate mandatory classes in meditation. When this occurs, our educational institutions will not simply train people how to make a living, but how to live lives that reflect the wisdom, creativity, fairness, compassion and inclusive sense of community that can redefine what it means to be a human being."

Tai Chi Better Than Physical Therapy for Knee Osteoarthritis

tai chi Mainstream medicine is coming around to the efficacy of the ancient art of Tai Chi. Although sounding a big begrudging, Christine Wang, M.D. did have this to say about a year-long trial: "Physical therapy, a globally recommended element of the standard care regimen for knee osteoarthritis, produces moderate benefits for pain and physical functioning, but data on psychological well-being and durability effects are limited. Identifying new and effective treatments for patients with knee osteoarthritis is an urgent clinical and public health priority."

During a period of 52 weeks, researchers conducted a single-blind, comparative effectiveness trial of 204 participants with symptomatic and radiographic knee osteoarthritis. Patients were randomly assigned to either a standardized tai chi regimen of twice per week for 12 weeks or a standard physical therapy twice per week for 6 weeks and then 6 weeks of home monitored exercise. The investigators measured WOMAC scores at 12 weeks, as well as depression, physical function, quality of life and medication use.

Results showed both groups demonstrated improved WOMAC pain scores after 12 weeks. Scores in the tai chi group dropped by 167 points (95% CI, 145-190) and scores in the physical therapy group dropped by 143 points (95% CI, 119-167). In addition, both groups experienced similar improvements in all secondary outcomes at 24 weeks and 52 weeks.

Researchers reported that participants in the tai chi group showed greater improvements in physical aspects of quality of life and depression. Furthermore, the benefits of tai chi were consistent among instructors and no serious adverse events were reported.

"The results of this comparative effectiveness trial support the supposition that tai chi, a multicomponent mind-body exercise, improves pain and well-being in patients with knee osteoarthritis," Wang and colleagues concluded. "Despite the substantial differences in delivering a mind-body intervention to a group and physical therapy to individual persons, both interventions produced similar effects in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Therefore, standardized tai chi should be considered as an effective therapeutic option for knee osteoarthritis. Further examination of the disease-modifying mechanisms of successful mind-body medicine will better inform clinical decision-making for patients with this therapeutically challenging disorder."

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: NSAIDs is the usual drug of choice in dealing with osteoarthritis, but there are side effects. Use E3 Energy Cream instead. It works like acupuncture--re-establishing energy flows across the region of pain. Add this to your tai chi practice, and the knees will thank you!

Mindfulness and Habituated Thought

thought My friend and consciousness coach, Janet Barrett, recently wrote an essay about "habituated thought," and how we so naturally and easily lay down in a thought groove and then solidify that with justifications and conclusions and use those to not be afraid, insecure or powerless.

Habituated thought is how we cope with the infiniteness of ourselves. We narrow down the bandwidth using judgments of right or wrong; we then justify those judgments by tying our experiences to them. We then leave it there--a nice comfortable little rut of unconsciousness.

We then continue packing these ruts around every facet of our lives until we can barely make out how we actually fit into all this. We lose ourselves in our own choices, judgments and conclusions.

It's not really our fault. We're trained in this way of thinking from the moment we learn the language, and from the role models of our parents who pass down various modules of habituated thought from their ancestors--and so it goes.

Humans are really good at spotting patterns, assigning meaning to them, and then encapsulating those meanings into definitions and ramifications. The problem with this innate genius is that we so rarely turn it in upon our own thinking. We get fleeting glimpses of patterns of behavior in ourselves and others, but once spotted, we rarely follow up because the illusion is that it really doesn't matter that much.

patterns News flash: It does matter. Mindfulness of oneself does matter. By simply being aware of how we are thinking and feeling, and being able to catch ourselves at those moments where past conclusions and judgments take over, we can, by using this as a tool, completely transform our lives beyond what we now think is possible.

Here are some easy-peasy, split second practices from Access Consciousness you can use that short-circuit habituated thinking and feeling patterns. By applying these tools, you free up creative energies and unburden yourself from heavy conclusions and judgments that just don't serve you.

Recently, I had an occasion to experience some pretty significantly deep self-doubt. It came in the form of a habituated thought pattern that was something like "Nothing is going to change / I don't see it changing / Maybe it will never change", and then the accompanying feeling was a knot in my solar plexus and a deep flash of discouragement and fear.

As soon as I became aware of the thinking pattern, I chanted to myself several dozen times (sometimes out loud). "Interesting point of view I have that point of view." I did this with the feelings, too.

I also asked, "Is this mine? Whose is this? Return to sender!"

Then, I topped off this series with the statement, "All of life comes to me with ease, joy and glory."

At first, it took about an hour of doing this to finally notice that the thoughts were beginning to lose their impact, and those feelings of discouragement and fear were fading. I continued with the series every time I spotted the thinking pattern start up again, or the feelings begin again.

wake up After about three days of this, I woke up one morning and felt much lighter and actually hopeful, and usually the waking up hour or two are the most filled with this hopeless thinking and feeling. Yay!

As the day progressed, I continued with these processes, and then added the question, "How does it get any better than this?" and "What else is possible?", along with creating feelings of gratitude. By the end of the day, my strength returned, the knot in the stomach was gone and I found myself saying, "I've got this. No problem."

Using these mindfulness tools is a matter of making them a priority in your life. Since you create your life with your awareness, choices, thoughts and feelings, it makes sense that making sure those activities are in good working order is a top priority.

We want to be able to spend our lives as the highest and the best creators we can be, and that takes the mindfulness necessary to keep the crud and crap cleaned off those creative jets. Who knows what amazing creations we are capable of?
