meditationIn most ancient spiritual traditions, the spiritual eye, located between the eyebrows, is connected to the pineal gland in the center of the brain. Here are steps to take that clear and rejuvenate this mystical "eye" for higher perspective and sensitivity to cosmic energies:

1) Breathing - Any conscious breathing practices activate the pineal and pituitary glands as well as stimulate the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Breathing is said to ionize the CSF and therefore increase its potency.
2) Tapping - Gently tapping your forehead in between your eyebrows sends a wave directly back to the pineal gland, activating it.

5) Being in Darkness - When the eyes have no light to process, the brain autommatically increases energy to the pituitary. Researchers have studied yogis who meditate in complete darkness for weeks, and who can see in the dark. It is postulated that the pineal gland picks up energies from objects, translating them into images in the brain.

Science Wrapping Its Head Around Breatharianism

coherence Breathariansim refers to the practice of sustaining oneself without food. This concept is not new; in fact, for thousands of years, various cultures around the world have written of this ability. Nikola Tesla said of this phenomenon:

My idea is that the development of life must lead to forms of existence that will be possible without nourishment and which will not be shackled by consequent limitations. Why should a living being not be able to obtain all the energy it needs for the performance of its life functions from the environment, instead of through consumption of food, and transforming, by a complicated process, the energy of chemical combinations into life-sustaining energy?
Liberation from food and hunger does indeed sound unrealistic and, from what we know of modern day biology, impossible. The Qigong practice of Bigu, and other -Qigong practices (which include the liberation from food) examined by science have yielded some extraordinary results.

Prahlad Jani, a local of Ahmedabad, India, claims that at the age of 11, the Hindu goddess Amba appeared to him and told him that he would no longer have to eat food. He has apparently lived in a cave since the 1970s, and claims not to have eaten anything for most of his 81 years (as of 2012).

Jani was tested in 2003 and in 2010 at Ahmedabad’s Sterling Hospital by Dr. Sudhir Shah and his team of doctors. During the first test, which took place in 2003, Jani was monitored 24/7 for 10 days by hospital staff and video cameras, where it was confirmed that he neither ate nor drank. He also did not show any physiological changes — a fact which, according to modern day medicine, should be impossible.

He was tested again at Sterling Hospital in 2010 from April 22 to May 6, observed by 35 researchers from the Indian Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences, among other organizations. This time, Jani did not eat or drink for two weeks. As with the previous test, he exhibited no ill effects from this abstention. A statement from a scientific group (which included the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences) given to ABC News back in 2012 reads as follows:

We realized that, if this whole phenomenon really exists in a human being even for 15 days, it would have immense application in unraveling secrets of medical science and its application for human welfare. We again make it clear that the purpose of this study was not to prove or disprove a person, but to explore a possibility in science and study a new phenomenon.


Ocean Healing

The latest research is revealed by scientist and marine biologist Wallace J. “Blue Mind” is defined as “a mildly meditative state characterized by calm, peacefulness, unity, and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life in the moment. It is inspired by water and elements associated with water, from the color blue to the words we use to describe the sensations associated with immersion.” We experience this state when we sit near water and gaze out at it. It induces a mindful state in which the brain is relaxed but focused.

Researchers at the University of Exeter found that people are healthier when they live closer to the English coast. The researchers looked at data from 48 million people in England from the 2001 census, comparing how close people lived to the sea with how happy they said they were.

Even just a view of the ocean can boost a person’s mental health. A study carried out by researchers at Canterbury University, Otago University, and Michigan State University in the USA, looked into the relationship between mental health and exposure to green and blue space. Blue space refers to the visibility of water. The study found that just being able to see the ocean contributes to wellbeing, and lower stress levels.

Patience as a Spiritual Practice


Time is a weirdly funny thing when it comes to us humans. It can drag, it can fly by, it can "take forever" or "happen in an instant". Because of this, time is the first thing we usually associate with being an illusion--once we accept this physical realm as an illusion, anyway.

In my current live-in care-giving gig for 93-year-old Hilbert, I've become more sensitive to time awareness. Hilbert spends his days mostly chair-bound, rarely able to leave his apartment without a lot of help to go to the doctor's office. He has a quip he likes to make: "Another day another 15 cents," as he grins. He ruminates freely about how the "pace of life" has changed so much, and how people have seemed to become so self-absorbed and un-interested in their own activities.

I argue that the stresors of life have rendered so many of us wrapped up in economic concerns and the relational backwash of it, that we are unable to pull our heads out of you know where. It seems the faster technology pushes us to go, the less amount of attention we all have to live full, expansive lives, unencumbered by the worries of modern life.

On a quantum level, of course, time becomes just another dimension--such as width, length and height. In fact, time can run backwards, or suddenly turn into a future that affects a current state. These are considered common quantum quirks. These effects are happening to our human experience, too, but we have that handy tool--the mind--to keep everything in a linear flow, when in Reality, there is no such thing.

Yet, as a major part of the human experience, the forward flow of time is a basic reality, without which there could be no commerce, no language, or perception of manifestation through personal efforts or power. In other words, time affords us a sort of linear playground upon which to express ourselves and to actualize the experiences we desire. This is where the practice of patience comes in.

As some wise person said, "Time exists so that everything doesn't happen at once." True enough, yet if we take into account imagination, it's not quite so true. We have desires that first instantly appear in our imaginations, which then begin their descent into our physical experiences. The "imaginary" fulfillment of a desire is the instantaneous existence of the desire as a certain vibration, or vibratory rate. If we can "hold" that manifestation in our imaginations long enough, the vibratory rate of it will begin to match a vibratory rate of the desire manifested. The crux of the matter is time, of course.

Most of us surround our desires with wall after wall of judgments and conclusions that all but insure the desire remains only in the imaginary realm. By opening up to the possibility of our desire actually appearing in the physical world, then the primary mental and spiritual practice becomes Patience.

We wait. We maintain. We watch. During this sensitive "coalescence" period, we remain committed and pure of intent with our birthing desire. This allows all sorts of blockages to arise to be cleared. Everything from the "how many more miles, Daddy?" to "This is taking forever", to "What if it NEVER happens?" Yes, what if? Good question. The answer is that this is a moot question, because doing the spiritual work of actualizing a desire, that question cannot be entertained, since by asking it, more and more time is injected into the actualization of the desire. Since we are immortal spiritual beings, we actually have "forever", so again, the question is moot.

Treat the practice of patience as the "secret sauce" to the manifestation of your desires, and watch the magic happen!

Meditation Tips from Yogananda

meditation #1. To meditate a short time with depth is better than to meditate for long hours with the mind running wild. In the beginning, therefore, don’t force yourself to sit for a long time. Strive for shorter, but deeper, meditations.

#2. Don’t feel badly if you find yourself too restless to meditate deeply. Calmness will come in time, if you practice regularly. Just never accept the thought that meditation is not for you. Remember, calmness is your eternal, true nature.

#3. A disciple was having difficulty with his meditations. He asked Sri Yogananda, “Am I not trying hard enough?” The Master answered, “You are trying too hard. You are using too much will power. It becomes nervous. Just be relaxed and natural.

#4. A devotee was having difficulty remaining awake, squeeze your eyes shut several times, then open them wide and stare straight ahead. Repeat this practice once or twice more. If you do this, sleepiness will cease to bother you.

#5. In meditation, try to go beyond thinking. As long as thoughts enter the mind, you are functioning on the conscious level. When dreaming, you are in subconsciousness; then you are more aware in the astral body. When your consciousness withdraws still more deeply, into superconsciousness, then you are centered in bliss, in the spine. In that bliss-state you are aware in the causal body, the soul.

#6. The soul loves to meditate. Contact with the Spirit is its greatest joy. If you experience mental resistance during meditation, remember that reluctance to meditate comes from the ego; it doesn’t belong to the soul.

#7. One who wants to be a concert pianist will practice at the piano twelve hours a day. That’s how it is with the search for God. How can you expect to know Him if you only half try? Here, however, is an encouraging thought: Everyone who makes a sincere effort on the spiritual path will surely reach his goal.

#8. Try to feel, when walking out of doors that everything around you is part of your own expanded awareness. Be aware of the sun’s rays on your skin. Think of the heat you feel from the sun as God’s energy. Let it fill your body with vitality and power. Imagine divine energy, through the sunlight, strengthening creatures everywhere on earth.

#9. Meditate more and more deeply, until calmness and joy become second nature to you. To be ecstatic is not difficult. It is thinking that it is difficult that holds you apart from it. Never think of divine joy as distant from you, and it will be with you always.

Building a Stronger Heart-Brain Connection for Health

On the other hand, when you experience positive emotions, your heart's communication to the brain is more orderly and stable, supporting cognitive function while encouraging positive feelings and emotional stability. Because the heart has this power over your brain, learning how to produce increased heart rhythm coherence will noticeably impact how you think, feel, perform and perceive. The HeartMath Institute notes that to strengthen your heart and brain connection, you'll need to practice ways to intentionally experience sincere positive emotions. When you're able to achieve heart rhythm coherence, several different bodily systems synchronize to the rhythm your heart produces. This state also causes increased synchronization between your heart and brain.

The Five Tibetan Rites

These ancient yogic exercises are the most efficient of all yoga series of asanas (poses), bringing about changes in the body quickly. We Create Our Grace

Last issue I was exploring how the Law of Attraction has a booby trap, as it tends to reflect back to you what it is you are experiencing in the present moment. So, if you are in pain, the Law of Attraction, gives you more pain as you are a vibratory match to pain.

The key phrase here is "vibratory match". So, the way to "break the law", is to consciously change your vibratory rate to match, say, compassion, or caring, or joy, or relief.

I've had the priviledge lately of being an in-home caregiver for a sweet 93-year old man. He is mostly chair-bound, and his most strenuous activities are walking to the bathroom, doing his personal hygeine and then hobbling back to his chair. This activity is painful to him, and now and then he is in a great deal of pain--enough to cause him to cry out.

I believe that because I have been dealing with some physical pain, I ended up being a vibratory match for this in-home care gig, but there was a whole other factor at play here. Mainly, that the "job" of caregiving is an act of compassion for me, and has pulled me out of engaging so much in my own pain.

In caring for this man, I found myself experiencing moments of joy and relief. And by observing this joy and relief, I could expand those feelings, and bring a higher level of peace and joy into my life.

The key take away here is that we all have the ability to CHANGE the way we feel, regardless of the outside causes of negative feelings. Even while in high levels of pain, I've been able to find a niche of feeling relief, and then focus on that. Lo and behold, pain levels diminish, and it makes it even more possible to feel relief, joy, compassion and ease.

In this way, the negative feelings and emotions we have, directly point to the other side of those feelings--the positive ones--that we have only to use our innate ability to access and experience. We tend to want to "suffer" using such justifications as "Why me?", or "This shouldn't be happening", when, in fact, we are ignorantly ignoring the fact that we have the ability to change our feelings, regardless of exterior causes.

By allowing ourselves to be with the negative feelings, it creates the space to originate feelings on the other positive end of the spectrum. I believe this is what is meant by "grace" and it is one of the greatest gifts of the human experience.

Dark Matter Could be Consciousness

dark matter Traditionally, scientists have been stalwart materialists. But doing so has caused them to slam up against the limitations of materialism.

What is turning some scientists into a completely different breed of believer is that in quantum mechanics, particles don’t have a definite shape or specific location, until they are observed or measured. Is this a form of proto-consciousness at play? According to the late scientist and philosopher, John Archibald Wheeler, it might. He's famous for coining the term, "black hole." In his view, every piece of matter contains a bit of consciousness, which it absorbs from this proto-consciousness field.

He called his theory the “participatory anthropic principle,” which posits that a human observer is key to the process. Of this Wheeler said, “We are participators in bringing into being not only the near and here but the far away and long ago." In his view, much like the Buddhist one, nothing exists unless there is a consciousness to apprehend it. On another front, Dr. Matloff posits that the presence of a proto-consciousness field could serve as a replacement for dark matter.

Dark matter supposedly makes up around 95% of the universe, although, scientists can’t seem to find any. So, for the sake of argument, if consciousness is a property that arises on the subatomic level with a confluence of particles, how do these tiny little bits of consciousness coalesce?

Neuroscientist and psychiatrist Giulio Tononi, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, proposes a slightly different take on panpsychism, called integrated information theory. Here, consciousness is a manifestation with a real, physical location, somewhere in the universe. We just haven’t found it yet. Dr. Tononi has actually put forth a metric for measuring how much consciousness a thing has. The unit is called phi. This translates into how much control a being can enact over itself or objects around it. The theory separates intelligence from consciousness, which some people assume are one in the same.

rewire The idea of neuroplasticity has given new hope to people with physical, emotional, and mental impairments that had hitherto been regarded as unchangeable. Conversely, just as it is possible for the software to change the hardware for the better, it can also change the hardware for the worse. Plastic does not mean elastic. Neural pathways become entrenched, and the more entrenched they become, the more they resist the process of rewiring. The older, entrenched pathways are paths of least resistance amongst which neurons like to communicate with each other, propelling us to keep repeating similar feelings, thoughts, and actions. Every time we use a particular pathway, it increases the likelihood that we will do it again.

Says author and researcher, Nicholas Carr, "The more a sufferer concentrates on his symptoms, the deeper those symptoms are etched into his neural circuits. In the worst cases, the mind essentially trains itself to be sick.” In short, whenever we’re stuck in habitual suffering, we’re not just wasting our life energy and time, we’re actively entrenching this suffering in our neurological pathways, making it more likely that we’ll suffer in the same way again. Suffering is not a free ride.

The essence of a Buddhist practice is to use mindfulness to develop singularity of thought (concentration/ samadhi), which can help us to get out of habitual thinking and feeling and help us to stop triggering our habitual neural pathways of suffering. Mindfulness, in effect, allows us to consciously rewire our brain for improved well-being.

Mindfulness is intentional and based on our free will. Free will can be applied in many ways. An athlete or musician will construct neural pathways in his or her brain through endless deliberate practice. However, the practice of an athlete or musician will rarely be self-aware, and while it may push pathways of suffering out of sight, it won’t transform them. Mindfulness may be the only state of mind that is wholly deliberate and wholly self-aware, and that is able to embrace other states of mind, transform them by re-framing and replacing them with desired states, and foster well-being, thereby allowing us to consciously rewire our brain.

The skill is in the persistence and practice of redirection: when a negative or attitude or point of view is encountered, one simply replaces it with a choice of something desired. MONARCA. This bipolar disorder app tracks user’s activity, moods, sleep patterns, medication adherence, stress levels, and alcohol consumption, as well as noticing triggers and early warning signs. It then shares the data with clinicians. Of course, there are dangers with self-assessments, but one study of 78 participants found that MONARCA users showed fewer manic symptoms after six months when compared to a group using a placebo app.

Headspace. This mindfulness meditation app has dominated the meditation market since its launch. It takes advantage of years of research on the benefits of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy programs, especially when it comes to reducing anxiety and depression. The Magic of Repetition

In my mind, the most NOT talked about thing about actualizing, manifesting or any form of creative alchemy is repetition. It's kind of magic's dirty little secret.

We forget sometimes that in the creation of our lives, what is repeated the most is most visible. We are all mighty creators, but by constant repetition of our limitations, constant repetition of our frailties, and constant repetition of limiting beliefs, we act and feel far from the mighty creators we started out as.

The subconscious is accessed and programmed by repetition. If we aren't consciously programming our subconscious, then the rest of our experience will program it for us, and because conditions in our life came about through repetition of viewpoints, conclusions, choices and judgements, we are going to be experiencing pretty much the same thing from day to day.

The subconscious can be visualized as a vast array of off/on switches, and these off/on switches are in circuit with the DNA in our genes. The important thing to know is that these switches require the repetition of an exact "command" in order to be switched on or off. A command is formed by our CHOICE. If we CHOOSE to accept or create a certain point of view, or feeling, for example, "I'm just not good enough to get what I desire", this conclusion becomes active.

When this happens, the mind begins to look for corroborating evidence of its truth. When the evidence is found (as it invariably is), this acts as an amplifier for that initial choice of "I'm just not good enough to get what I desire". Now, repeat this enough times, and the subconscious adds this switch to its vast array, and soon the experience of "not being good enough" goes on automatic, adding yet another layer to the subconscious programming.

The conscious mind now begins to observe all sorts of ways this "I'm not good enough" command is true in life, and without any countering commands, it just keeps getting re-enforced and soon, our life experience is in a miserable, downward spiral.

That's why when we CHOOSE to change our life into something exciting and worth living, all the reasons why that can't happen immediately show up. This is the "switch" that we had previously carefully and skillfully installed! Now it becomes a matter of repeating the choice--over and over--until the subconscious program is overwritten--that switch is turned off, and a new switch is turned on: "My life is exciting and worth living."

The complicating factor is ego. Our sense of self has a dark side that basically campaigns for the subconscious. Whatever the dominant program is that is running in the subconscious, the ego owns it, makes it personal, and defends it. That's why after we've made the CHOiCE to change, experiences will come up that seem to invalidate that choice, and we take it personally. That's the dark ego talking. The trick is to get the ego on your side. Get it to be a cheerleader for your positive choices.

We can do that by simply noticing that the sheer act of making the choice to change caused life experiences of the opposite. If we frame those negative experiences as progress, and are, as a result, encouraged, the ego will soon jump on board and start telling you how great it's all going!

I've been studying with a powerful shaman lately, and she keeps repeating, "Why would you continue to choose to feel BAD about your circumstances after you have already CHOSEN the circumstances you desire?" Good point. And it has everything to do with training the conscious mind to train the subconscious mind toward what we truly desire.

So it all boils down to CHOICE and REPETITION, folks. Pretty damn simple, actually. Although some would argue simple is not easy, and this is true...at first. The hard part is feeling those old feelings that jump up to try to re-enforce the program you are choosing to change, and the ego is taking it personally (before it switches over to your side). At a certain point, after much repetition, these feelings and experiences fade away, and are replaced by the joy and ease you are choosing. It's a process. Enjoy it, and the magic that is sure to follow!

Childhood Experiences Change DNA

DNA DNA is the genetic material that makes us who we are, determining our physical characteristics and even helping to shape our personality. There are many ailments that have a strong hereditary component—Alzheimer's, Huntington's Disease, cancers and diabetes among others—and the risk of suffering them is passed down from our parents through our DNA.

But we're finding out that our DNA isn't always set in stone. Now, a team of researchers from Northwestern University led by anthropology professor Thom McDade have shown that DNA can also be modified by your environment during childhood. What's more, the authors conclude in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, those modifications can affect how or when you develop certain illnesses during adulthood.

Their investigation followed more than 500 children in the Philippines and found that certain childhood situations can create modifications in genes associated with inflammation, which affects how prone we are to suffer from certain illnesses.

The authors determined that the childhood environment of these youths affected the level of inflammation-related proteins in their blood during adulthood, likely as a result of methylation (activation) of some of their inflammation-related genes. The dysregulation of these proteins can affect health and risk of disease.

The nutritional, microbial, psychological and social environments that children are exposed to growing up are critical for their physiology and health later in life, says McDade. As to the effects of specific childhood environments, he pointed to prolonged breastfeeding, exposure to microbes, and an abundance of family assets that led to better regulation of the inflammatory proteins.

In turn, the prolonged absence of a parent, the lack of exposure to microbes, and the lack of family assets were predictive of a higher dysregulation of the inflammatory proteins. This is one of the first and most complete investigations that show that epigenetic modifications created by the environment have lasting effects on human health.

Feeling Offended? It's Not You, It's A Program

We, individually and collectively, are being faced with the task of having to face these things so we can understand and then evolve beyond them — shifting ourselves and shifting our world, in essence.

But! There is also a role being played by the owners and controlling elite in the media, who want to maintain control over the population as we become more self aware. To prevent us from raising these deeper internal questions, the focus is being brought back to the external. It's being brought to things like race, gender, our appearance, the words we use, who's right, who's wrong, and who we can judge and for what reason. We're being systematically taught how NOT to change. And it's being done through innocent memes, articles, videos, and even loving intention at times, all lacking deeper thought.

Think about it: When have you ever seen in the media, when something potentially offensive arises, the suggestion that instead of getting angry, we use that experience to understand why someone may say or do the things they do or question why that bothers us? Instead of looking at the deeper question and choosing to understand, we're being taught simply to react and tell people they are right or wrong. Which in essence… changes nothing.

Revealing Oz

As a person who is committed to self-transformation, I continually "choose the red pill" when it comes to pulling the curtain aside on my own unconscious, to reveal the false power of the "Oz" that pushes the buttons and pulls the strings and levers of the monkey mind of reactions and negative feelings.

Recently, I uncovered yet another subconscious "entity" in the form of a "demand for retribution". This is a strong one because there are ao many justifications for this in the world--so many victimizers and so many victims, who in many cases seem completely innocent, unfairly attacked or debilitated, sometimes outrageously so, and in some cases killed.

For me, this has the effect of exacerbating or "keying in" this Demand for Retribution. It feels like a Quentin Tarantino revenge movie with as much blood and gore as possible. What is that saying? "Revenge is best served cold"?

The tragic problem with this fantasy, in my own case, is that the "wrongness" I feel that was perpetrated upon me, requires that the injury it caused continues to victimize me. So, the injury becomes this huge justification for achieving retribution against the oppressors and perpetrator in a future that never comes.

This is a classic case of "continual present time re-stimulation". Every time I feel the pain of that injury, it adds charge and power to the retribution program. Every time there's an injustice out in the world that I personally witness, or hear about on the "news" (victimization events are guaranteed to make the news), the need for revenge and accountability grows ever stronger, and pains and discomforts of my life further solidify as a constant reminder of that deep need for revenge against my victimizers, or at the very least some "street justice".

The great thing about "The Oz" is that its power is granted by the curtain behind which it hides as it creates and broadcasts its fearful images. Pull aside the curtain, and there is no more power. This becomes a metaphor for all injustice in the world: reveal the "operators" and "owners" behind their curtains of power, and that power is effectively stripped from them. Then we all can see they are just like us, living in their own worlds of fearful disempowerment and victimization.

To mop up residual charge from this revelation, every time I see or hear of some perpetrator victimizing someone or something, when those retribution feelings surface, I say, "Interesting point of view I have that point of view." This process neutralizes the negativity around the issue. Then, "Who does this belong to?" and "return to sender" because all negative thoughts are not mine--they had been adopted by me as if they were my own.

As always, the non-duality of compassion is the key here; compassion for both sides of a perpetrator-victim complex. Compassion removes the polarity of the drama, and reduces it to an observation of choices: Each "side" made their choices and it resulted in this drama. Both are deserving of love--even if they don't love each other or themselves.

The quantum matrix program we live in is driven by choice. Choose a different outcome, and the matrix program adjusts to accommodate that choice. Choose to retain a negativity or grudge or point of view, and the matrix program adjusts to accommodate that.

The quantum sea of energy has no agenda on its own, but it can be programmed to appear that it does. All of us who have had the perception of the "world being against us" will attest to that. The truth is we created that program of the world being against us. We can just as easily create a world that is in favor of us.

Conscious Breath Has Health Benefits

breathe According to ancient yogic texts, our vital life force--our Prana or our breath--derives from Pranayama, the practice of controlled breathing. Science is finally starting to catch up to the knowledge outlined in the Vedas, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and other ancient texts.

The average individual takes approximately 20,000 breaths daily, but how many of those do we consciously think about? The beauty of the breath is that it can be a voluntary or involuntary process — if we didn’t think about breathing, it would still happen, but when we do think about it, we can decide what to do with it. You can consciously choose to slow your breathing, for example, or to engage in techniques that control your breathing, which then affect your involuntary breathing process.

One simple technique to nourish and normalize the parasympathetic nervous system, and thus the major organs of the body is to breathe in for a count of 4, breathe out for a count of 5, repeat several times. This type of breathing helps detox the body of stuck metabolic wastes, as well as calms the nerves.

Your breath is responsible for supplying your body with oxygen; it is literally your life source. You cannot survive without it. However, it can do so much more than that! Your breath can aid your digestion, your brain, your cellular health, your immune system, and so much more. You can capitalize on these incredible benefits of controlled breathing through meditation or simply by changing your breathing technique.

Herbert Benson, M.D. Harvard Medical School, wrote a book titled Relaxation Response in which he discussed numerous medical studies on the health benefits of meditation. The Relaxation Response is basically the opposite of the “fight or flight” response and can be described as a deep relaxation that engages the parasympathetic nervous system, otherwise known as meditation.

According to Dr. Benson, the Relaxation Response can counteract the physiological changes of stress and the fight or flight response, including muscle tension, headache, upset stomach, racing heartbeat, and shallow breathing. If the body reacts with the fight or flight response or any other stress response too often — and chronic stress like this is endemic to modern society — the body secretes high levels of stress hormones, which can produce a wide range of stress-related health issues such as cardiovascular disease, GI diseases, adrenal fatigue, and more.

Mounting Evidence that the Universe is Conscious

conscious Traditionally, scientists have been stalwart materialists. But doing so has caused them to slam up against the limitations of materialism. Consider the chasm between relativity and quantum mechanics, or Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, and you quickly start to recognize these incongruities.

The replacement theory is mind-body dualism. This is perhaps more often recognized in religion or spirituality. Here, consciousness is separate from matter. It is a part of another aspect of the individual, which in religious terms we might call the soul. Then there’s a third option which is gaining ground in some scientific circles, panpsychism. In this view, the entire universe is inhabited by consciousness. A handful of scientists are starting to warm to this theory, but it’s still a matter of great debate. Truth be told, panpsychism sounds very much like what the Hindus and Buddhists call the Brahman, the tremendous universal Godhead of which we are all a part. In Buddhism for instance, consciousness is the only thing that exists.

In quantum mechanics, particles don't have a definite shape or specific location, until they are observed or measured. Is this a form of proto-consciousness at play? According to the late scientist and philosopher, John Archibald Wheeler, it might. He's famous for coining the term, "black hole." In his view, every piece of matter contains a bit of consciousness, which it absorbs from this proto-consciousness field. He called his theory the "participatory anthropic principle," which posits that a human observer is key to the process. Of this Wheeler said, “We are participators in bringing into being not only the near and here but the far away and long ago." In his view, much like the Buddhist one, nothing exists unless there is a consciousness to apprehend it.

On another front, Dr. Matloff posits that the presence of a proto-consciousness field could serve as a replacement for dark matter. Dark matter supposedly makes up around 95% of the universe, although, scientists can’t seem to find any. So, for the sake of argument, if consciousness is a property that arises on the subatomic level with a confluence of particles, how do these tiny little bits of consciousness coalesce?

Neuroscientist and psychiatrist Giulio Tononi, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, proposes a slightly different take on panpsychism, called the "integrated information theory". Here, consciousness is a manifestation with a real, physical location, somewhere in the universe. We just haven’t found it yet. Perhaps this heavenly body radiates out consciousness as our sun radiates light and heat.

Dr. Tononi has actually puts forth a metric for measuring how much consciousness a thing has. The unit is called phi. This translates into how much control a being can enact over itself or objects around it. The theory separates intelligence from consciousness, which some people assume are one in the same.

In this stillness, desire the uplifting feeling you would like to have, and as you breathe, imagine breathing this new feeling into your being for a while. Imagine you are creating it with your breath.

2) If you’re feeling low, try sitting quietly and imagine radiating love, compassion and stillness into your mental and emotional nature. Self-care is often allowing ourselves to have a low moment without compounding it with self-criticism. When our light is dim, it helps to give ourselves the feeling of compassionate heart warmth. Even if it doesn't stop the pain, we know it can help energetically. You can soon feel a difference when doing these exercises, unless extremely challenged. If it doesn’t work the first time, be patient and simply try again later. Being genuine makes the difference. Practicing for a few days in a row strengthens your capacity to reset unwanted thoughts, feelings and attitudes. Simple exercises such as these can lift your happiness and outlook more than you may think. Make it fun to consciously raise the vibration of your thoughts and feelings throughout the day to match who you are in your heart of hearts. Watch your spirit lift and the stress accumulation diminish.

These practices especially help to open our heart more in our interactions, which is often the missing piece in our pursuit for peace.
