Hacking Memes

success meme Since embracing the "quantum" way of life, many things have changed for me. I notice I have really different "pet peeves"--behaviors of self or others that stimulate an automatic reaction because of a pre-conceived judgment or point of view.

We call them "pets" because we have no intention of letting them go, mainly because, I'm pretty sure in my case, anyway, letting the Pet Peeves run rampant gives a certain "rush" of control; an outburst of a point of view; the heart-felt judgment or justification of who you are. I think we embrace certain Pet Peeves in order to make it seem we're participating in life and expressing ourselves about what we need and desire, much like we do with our pets.

One of the newer Pets I've been letting run amok, is rebelling against memes about process. Here are a few (actually seen on Facebook) that usually put me in a state of rebellion:

  • "When I don't work hard, I lose money."
  • "A year from now, you will have wished you had started today."
  • "Consistency always leads to excellence. Whatever you do in life, always be consistent"
  • "The road to success comes through hard work, determination and sacrifice"
Everyone, it seems, has their own formula for success. And most people would probably nod their heads as to the truth of these statements. The problem is, each one of them, under certain circumstances and possibilities, are absolutely false.

memes For example, I've worked hard and lost money. I've also made a lot of money without doing hardly anything.

A year from now I'm not going to be mulling over my choices I'm making now. I'll be making new choices without any regrets.

Consistency is also the way to mediocrity, stuckness and non-mindfulness.

We all know examples where "hard work, determination and sacrifice" has not led to success.

Conventional wisdom without introspection allows one to embrace these memes, not because they are really true, but because they sound like they should be.

All of the memes above are about process--the way you do things; the right way to do things. From the quantum perspective, however, they are one way of doing the process.

What gets me up on my soapbox about thinking in this unexamined way, is that it completely deletes out possibilities. There are a million ways conditions, things and experiences manifest in the world. Why narrow it down to one measily meme?

By applying infinite quantum states to the things you want and the life you desire, it is the certainty that asking the question puts the universe into motion is key. Sure you'll have stuff to do when you start asking about a better job, a bigger house, nicer car, or an epic relationship, but without living in the question of those things, it can only be hard work and sacrifice--that one way you are convinced is the only way.

The universe always has your back. There's even a word for it: "pronoia", which I've written about in past issues. The universe has your back only when you embody the question. It's then that the universe gets busy bringing you what you want in the way that is best for you.

Questions such as, "What would it take for the best house to show up for me that would bring joy and ease?"; "What energy do I need to be to receive an epically healing and generative relationship?"; or, "What is it going to take to bring about a big change in my life toward joy and fulfillment?" Then, you remain in that question as the Universe goes about answering it.

pronoia I'm not saying there won't be hard work. I am saying "hard work" is one possibility. If there are infinite ways something appears in this universe, then there are certainly other ways than "hard work" for it to show up. Maybe it's joyous work. Maybe it's play that doesn't feel like work at all. Maybe it's just answering the phone. Or, maybe it's enthusiastic involvement.

My point is to be mindful about how you've decided to make things happen. Look at what processes you believe must be in place before something happens for you. Then, realize that is only one way of looking at it. If you must have a process, or a checklist of things to do to get what you want, then ask the universe for options--the most fun ones. But always remain in the question, and the quantum Universe will deliver.

Five Useful Changes Created by Meditation

meditation
Decreases Need To Sleep: A study conducted by the University of Kentucky showed that meditation provides at the minimum a short-term cognitive improvement even in beginner meditators. In long term practitioners, who spend significant time in meditation there is a link with the need to sleep significantly less when compared with people of the same demographic who do not meditate.

Improves Your Immune System: Stress, lack of sleep and bad emotional regulation all affect your body on not only a psychological level, but also on a physical level. A study from Harvard Medical School showed that practitioners of yoga and meditation had improved mitochondrial energy production, consumption and resiliency which improve your immune system and resilience to stress.

Improved Sense Of Touch: Researchers at the Ruhr-University Bochum and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University München performed studies on experienced Zen Monks that showed an improved sense of touch. In order to assess the sense of touch quantitatively, researchers measured the so-called "two-point discrimination threshold". This marker indicates how far apart two stimuli need to be, in order to be discriminated as two separate sensations. After a finger meditation, the performance improved on average by 17 percent.

Improved Breathing: In most types of meditation you are very consciously focused on your breathing, filling your lungs up with air. The more you practice this the more it becomes a part of your unconscious, which leads to better, deeper breathing patterns.

Higher Pain Threshold And Resilience To Illness: When you have strong meditation skills, you are able to shift your conscious focus towards other things when experiencing pain. A study from the University of Montreal exposed 13 experienced meditators and 13 non-meditators to equal degrees of pain using heat while measuring their brain waves. The experienced meditators reported less pain than was shown on their scans, so even though their brains had been receiving the same level of pain, in their minds they felt it less.

Helps You To Avoid Overwhelm: Research from the University of Washington and University of Arizona explored whether training in meditation or relaxation can improve office workers' ability to multitask on a computer more effectively and/or with less stress. Human resource (HR) personnel were given 8 weeks of training in either mindfulness meditation or body relaxation techniques, and were given a stressful multitasking test both before and after training. Opposed to the control group, the meditation group reported lower levels of stress and showed better memory for the tasks they had performed; they also switched tasks less often and remained focused on tasks longer.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: For an active meditation practice we recommend our Meditation Elixirs. In particular the Zen formula and Success & Achievement formula specifically enhance focus and attention span.

Longevity through Forgiveness

forgiveness People who genuinely forgive tend to be healthier and happier, science suggests. For example, a recent University of California, San Diego, study found that participants who thought about a hurtful event experienced lingering blood pressure spikes.

In another study published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, scientists compared participants who did not forgive a prior perceived wrong with those who did. The participants were then asked to walk to the foot of a hill. The forgivers perceived the hill to be considerably less steep than those who held a grudge, suggesting that forgiving can lead to optimism.

Robert Enright, professor of educational psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a leader in forgiveness research, and a founding member of the International Forgiveness Institute. In one of his books on the subject, Forgiveness is a Choice, Enright breaks forgiveness into five steps:

  1. Admit you’ve been treated unfairly.
  2. Express your anger.
  3. Recognize the wrongdoer is a person who is more than the offense at hand.
  4. Accept that your pain may never go away completely.
  5. Find meaning in the experience and grow from it.

When forgiving seems too generous but you recognize you must move on, psychologist Janis Abrahms Spring, author of How Can I Forgive You?, suggests taking these steps:

  • Let go of your preoccupation with the slight. Move on.
  • If you find yourself ruminating over the painful event, pause and say aloud: "Stop!" Redirect your thoughts to something pleasurable.
  • Don't make it all about you. "When someone feels wronged, they often feel shame and shattered," Spring says. But sometimes insensitive behavior stems from the other person's own hurt, life challenges or a misunderstanding.
  • Protect yourself from further hurt. "Decide what level of relationship makes sense with this other person so you are no longer in harm's way," Spring says. Cutting yourself off entirely is rarely the healthiest option. Instead, establish boundaries that will protect you from repeat offenses.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Forgiveness is a great opportunity to use our gem elixirs, which excel at assisting with this. For forgiveness in particular, use Peridot, and/or Rutilated Quartz.

Self-Healing Is More Common Than you Think

self-healing Although the mind isn't a consistent miracle cure, there is now overwhelming evidence that it drives biological changes that are crucial for physical health, influencing everything from pain to the immune system.

Our mental state has particularly dramatic effects when it comes to the symptoms we experience: things like pain, nausea, fatigue and depression. Playing a virtual-reality game eases pain in burn patients by as much as 50 percent (PDF) more than drugs alone, while research on placebos (fake treatment) tells us that psychological factors such as expectation and social interaction ease symptoms via biological changes very similar to those caused by drugs. Placebo painkillers trigger the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins. Parkinson's patients respond to placebos with a flood of needed dopamine. Breathing fake oxygen can reduce the levels of neurotransmitters called prostaglandins, which cause many of the symptoms of altitude sickness.

Trials show that during invasive medical procedures such as breast biopsies or destruction of tumors, people who feel negative or anxious beforehand suffer more complications (things like prolonged lack of oxygen, low or high blood pressure, post-operative bleeding or an abnormally slow heart rate). Relaxation techniques such as visualizing a safe place vastly reduce pain and anxiety during these procedures—as well as the rate of adverse events. In one study, terminal cancer patients offered early palliative care chose to receive less aggressive treatment. They were less depressed, had a better quality of life—and they lived longer.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: In quantum medicine, everything is energy. This includes the entire biofield within and around a person--all the magnetic fields, electrical potentials and currents--all of which are affected by the mind, through our decisions, preferences, intentions and perceptions. Stress (mental, physical, emotional and spiritual) is the greatest threat to well-being and health. Use our E-1 Stress Relief Formula to balance and harmonize the entire body biofield.

This Quantum Life

As An Infinite Being, You Chose What?

infinite being One of the most basic realities about being a spiritual being is that we are infinite. We have all the power, all the awareness, all the knowledge we need to create anything we desire. In fact--a hard fact--is that we have created, in great detail, everything we are experiencing in our lives.

If you compare what your life would be like if you were to fully embrace your infiniteness with what you currently are experiencing, there is probably a "YUUGE" difference. Why is this?

For various reasons over the last few billion years, we have diminished our own power, and our own awareness, to the point where we are mere fractions of what we could be in this world. Why did we do that? Lots of reasons: We did it for someone else; we judged ourselves to be incorrect or wrong; we did it to fit in with a lesser or rule-abundant crowd; we decided being powerful and aware was unacceptable; etcetera, etcetera...

Gary Douglas, founder of Access Consciousness, has a good question that can help set you on the path to reclaiming your personal power and awareness: "Would an infinite being create that?"

"My money is always short at the end of the month" -- And an infinite being would create that for what reason?

infinite being "When I argue with my wife, I'm always wrong." -- And an infinite being would create that for what reason?

"I never have enough money to do what I want." -- well, you guessed it.

My old buddy, Bashar, has three questions that should blow your mind and help with this:

  1. I am feeling (experiencing, having) (fill in the blank)>
  2. I CHOSE this for myself.
  3. I CHOSE this for myself because it serves me.

Now this cuts right into the meat of how we, as infinite beings, have come to be functioning as we are in this physical world: CHOICE. We choose everything that happens to us, and it's not as simple as making a black or white, 1-2 choice. Sometimes we make big decisions (choices) about "the way things are" in order to hold those conditions in place to minimize our powers or make ourselves "right". We may choose pain and suffering to prove to ourselves we deserve it for all the times we decided we misused our power.

There are a multitude of reasons we make the choices we do, and the key is to become AWARE of what choices we've made. because when we usually make a choice, we promptly forget about it--especially negative ones. We call it "human nature." I call it "de-evolution".

restoring power By using Bashar's three sentences, we can unravel how it is we ended up here, and it allows us (or forces us) to ask the right question. "How or why is this serving me, and why the hell do I think it's a good thing?"

What we're going for here is AWARENESS. Awareness trumps past choices--it interrupts the energy flow created by the choice, and requires that a new choice be made. In this way, we can (if we so choose) clear out the present and the future of negative choices, replacing them with life-affirming, loving, adventurous ones.

"Choice awareness" is the primary driver of happiness and success. If you're always choosing the energies of your highest expression, infinite possibilities unfold, and power is restored.

Your Body Knows Your Future

precognition A recently published study (meta analysis) in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience titled "Predicting the unpredictable: critical analysis and practical implications of predictive anticipatory activity", examined a number of experiments regarding this phenomenon that were conducted by several different laboratories.

These experiments indicate that the human body can actually detect randomly delivered stimuli that occur 1-10 seconds in advance. In other words, the human body seems to know of an event, and reacts to an event that has yet to occur. What occurs in the human body before these events are physiological changes that are measured regarding the cardiopulmonary, the skin, and the nervous system.

It's important to note that these types of responses to future events that are measured in the body are unconscious responses, meaning that the subject (human) is not aware that they are actually taking place. So it is a form of pre cognition, but not full blown conscious premonitions.

The fact that changes in our physiological activity in the autonomic nervous system changes and prepares for future events is remarkable, and the fact that this is "unconscious precognition" should not take away from the fact that it helps us better understand the phenomenon of conscious precognition in a scientific sense. We are still waiting for science to catch up and provide an explanation for conscious precognition, regardless of whether the phenomenon has been observed or not.

If our body (parts of our nervous system) can obtain information about events seconds in the future, why would we not have the inability to not make this information conscious? Maybe we do have that potential.

Researchers in the first study used in this article suggest that this might be the case because the information is not useful, similar to the majority of information that is usually processed unconsciously. They also suggest that the conscious mind may not be able to make such quick decisions. They state "it might be evolutionarily advantageous for unconscious processing to assess upcoming events, filter them, mobilize resources, and only then inform conscious awareness.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Precognitive reactions to future events can be a major source of stress--especially if you're already stressed out with present events. Use our E-1 Formula (Stress Relief) to harmonize and balance body systems so they can react comfortably.

Understanding Mindfulness

mindfulness

What's the difference between mindfulness and meditation?
While meditating is usually associated with a sitting practice often guided by the breath, mindfulness extends that practice into everyday life and focuses on cultivating awareness in the present. Sometimes compared to mental strength training, mindfulness can be practiced washing the dishes, driving to work, brushing your teeth and during other routine tasks. The point is to prevent your mind from wandering, projecting fear and worry from the past and future and training yourself to accept and enjoy the moment.

Are there any real health benefits to mindfulness?
Experts say mindfulness offers a rest for the brain, increased productivity and the ability to turn off the unfulfilling autopilot of the daily grind and instead live in the present moment.

"The mind body connection isn't just something you feel. There is a physiology that begins at the molecular level that goes all the way to the organ level," said Dr. Darshan Mehta, medical director of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. "It challenges this conventional wisdom that as we get older our brains shrink in size. That's true for most people, but for people who do have a consistent regular mind body practice that may not necessarily be the case."

What kind of apps are out there?
Emily Fletcher is the host of a new podcast for Gaiam's recently launched-app, which offers nearly two dozen teachers from different lineages for $2.99. Most are between four to 15-minutes and Fletcher's offering include guided visualization for a first date, sports performance and test taking. 1 Giant Mind's free app includes sessions between 10 and 20 minutes with a guide, music or silence. Headspace's popular app offers 10-minute guided meditations.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Mindfulness is a matter of focus on the present moment. After all, everything that is happening is happening now. Use our Meditation Elixirs (particularly Zen and Higher Guidance) to discover new pathways for mindfulness.

Nature: The Original Healer

nature heals Sensitivity to nature's healing energy can help you in your quest to achieve well-being. Research shows that time in nature lowers boosts immunity, decreases blood pressure and calms activity in areas the brain associated with stress. Our bodies and spirits seem to thrive on time near bodies of water, under vast skies, and near trees, grass, and brush. Nature is, after all, our home. Nature can bring us back into our bodies and reconnect us with ourselves. We evolved to be outdoors, sharing the planet with plants, insects, and other creatures, with our feet on the earth and our eyes scanning the distance as well as seeing what is right in front of us.

When you feel you are overstimulated by all that is happening in your environment and in your mind, take yourself to a forest, a lake, a desert, or somewhere else in nature, and you will probably find it doesn't take very long to begin to feel a shift in your awareness and mood. Your intuition will start to awaken. Listen to it and let it draw you to those natural spaces where you can engage energy that will balance and refresh you.

You may find that simply being in your back yard, near a public garden, or in a particular spot in a meadow where you feel drawn to sit for a while helps you to reconnect to the balancing, healing energies of nature. Explore natural areas, away from the distractions of everyday modern life and away from the energy fields of electronic equipment that might interfere with your ability to tune into nature's energies.

If you are called to change your plans for the day and go to a nature preserve, it could be because your unconscious mind may know what your conscious mind is denying: that you are in need of connecting to nature's healing powers. When you return to your routine activities, you may find that you have greater focus, energy and clarity than if you had simply willed yourself to stick with your agenda.

Once you are by the roots of a particular tree, or seated in a grassy spot on the riverbank, or in any other natural place that calls to you, listen to your instincts about how you might work with nature. Sit and focus on the experience of the earth underneath you, the wind and sky surrounding you, the sun warming your skin, and the smells of forest, river, meadow or sea entering your nostrils. Allow your senses to fully awaken as you adjust to the music of the space. Focus on the sensations you are experiencing. In this way, you open yourself up to the subtle energies that can infuse you, heal you or wash out of you what is no longer needed. Let nature do what it needs to do to the energy that enlivens your body and causes your cells to reproduce and do the work of keeping you alive.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: If you absolutely cannot get out and find a natural area, you can still create a clear, clean space with our Clean Sweep spray--the next best thing to being in Nature.

This Quantum Life

Choosing and Predicting

routine I love those moments when "out of the blue" you get an insight on how you've been living your life--and they seem to come when I'm doing something mundane, like walking the dog, driving the car, or grocery shopping (must be some neurological circumstance of some sort)... Anyway, today a big existential question came crashing in: "Do I really know what's going to happen, or am I choosing it?"

Now, what I mean by "knowing what's going to happen", is a range of things--from daily routines where you pretty much know what's going to happen when you take a shower, or do the dishes--to knowing where the money is going to be coming from to pay the rent. In fact, all those circumstances that you just know are going to happen, and do, make up the matrix of our lives; and we don't often stop to see all the choices we make moment by moment to keep that matrix rolling along.

The quantum truth of the matter is that ANYTHING could happen AT ANY MOMENT, since quantum states exist in and out of time, which makes all possibilities possible at any time. I might think I know what's going to happen when I get in the shower, but then the water suddenly shuts off because the City workers turned off the water to the apartment while they repaired the broken main. Or, I think I know what's going to happen when I do the dishes, but then the garbage disposal jams...and I get all bent out of shape about it.

The point I'm attempting to make is that by habitually pre-determining our choices by making predictions about our own activities, shuts off the infinite other amazing possibilities that could happen. I think we construct a nice, predictable set of circumstances for ourselves that (we think) guarantees security for our reality (our money situation, our living quarters, or transportation, our relationships). But what if by doing this we unwittingly cut ourselves off from a huge potential of fantastically wonderful things that could happen to us?

actualization Perhaps a more "quantum" way to live would be to--instead of predicting what's going to happen--we just float in the question: "What amazing things await me at any moment?"

There have been manifestation experiments where it was shown that asking questions about something greater happening, is far superior to visualization techniques. In other words, jump out of the box of yourself and trust that the Universe has your back, and is going to give you what you desire. Your job is not to limit it to a specific set of familiar circumstances.

We have all been burned badly by the unpredictable, so the idea of asking open-ended questions about our desires feels like giving up our personal power, and control, and that is scary.

Gary Douglas, founder of Access Consciousness tells us to "live in 10 second increments"--where any choice can be changed within 10 seconds. Now that's freedom. You desire something? Get the energy of that thing--just the energy of what it feels like, not what it looks like--and keep choosing that, and follow the energy to the actualization of that desire.

68 seconds Abraham Hicks has a famous saying: "Hold a thought for just 17 seconds, and the Law of Attraction kicks in. Hold a thought for 68 seconds and things move; manifestation has begun."

So, rather than "predicting" everything that's happening to you (thus guaranteeing the same old-same old), start choosing your desires by asking questions like, "What would it take for ______ to show up?" "What energy, space and consciousness do I need to be for __________ to happen?"

After a little practice, things really will start moving directly toward your desires, and if you stay out of the habit of needing to have a predictable life, who knows what fantastic things could happen?

Restorative Yoga: Beyond Exercise

relax

It's called restorative yoga. The goal is total relaxation: laying in a dimly lit room, listening to either silence or calming music (Enya is the obvious the go-to; and yes, she's still making music) with a blanket draped over you and firm pillows, called bolsters, to support your body. The restoration comes in the state of being just before falling asleep. Getting there is harder than it looks.

According to April Reiersen, a New York City-based family nurse practitioner with a holistic specialty and a 500-hour registered yoga teacher with training in restorative yoga, this practice facilitates a quality of physical and mental rest that promotes balance in the nervous system response.

"It's a recalibration of the body's physiological response to stress, away from reactive patterns that lead to chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system-rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, tense muscles, and slow digestion," Reiersen says in an interview with The Daily Beast. "This 'fight or flight' response is key to human survival; however, when we remain in these states of chronic stress long-term, it is a setup for disease in the body," she adds.

The science behind mind-body medicine is rapidly growing. Reiersen cites rising consensus around the undeniable link between state of mind and health of the body. Studies in psychoneuroimmunology and psychoneuroendocrinology show improved immune responses and balanced hormones, respectively. She considers the art of relaxing as a form of preventative medicine.

"Chronic stress triggers inflammatory responses, and increased inflammation plays a central role in many diseases. Studies have shown that relaxation therapies promote a decrease in inflammatory signaling in stressful situations. When the body is allowed to rest we see a physiologic response that promotes the health and healing of the body," Reiersen explains. In many ways, it's easier to exercise--the act of movement--than face the stressors of life head on through a more passive practice like restorative yoga. This may be because we never really learned how to handle stress without exercise. We never learned how to be ok with being still.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: The stress that can really damage health is the stress we have gotten used to. With mindful resting, one becomes aware of new places where stress has taken up residence in the body. Use our E-1 Formula (Stress Relief) to harmonize and balance body systems that are out of whack.

Joy Does Not Have to Be Intensity

okayness We find what we look for. Neuroscience calls this phenomenon the brain's "confirmation bias". Your brain tends to see what it believes to be true and misses whatever doesn't confirm its hypothesis. If you don't think you experience much true happiness because you're holding an image that it should be a peak experience of ecstasy, you probably will keep confirming that belief.

However, if you see moments of "okayness"--moments where you're not suffering--as moments worthy of appreciation, you open the channel to true well-being. And the more you notice and take them in, the stronger that flow of true well-being naturally becomes--not through force but through wise attention. As neuroscience expert Rick Hanson says: "The brain is like Teflon for positive experiences and Velcro for negative ones."

When you let go of looking for ecstatic states, you can find joy in the most commonplace moments. Edith, a student in Germany, had somehow equated joy with intense positive experiences. But when she stopped looking for those and just opened up to a simple feeling of well-being she started to experience things very differently. She put it this way:

"I noticed how much joy there already is and how I had somehow looked for a kind of super-mundane, 'spiritual' joy, more profound and lasting than our ordinary joy, that I would only reach if I practiced hard and in the right way. By having this concept, and by looking for this other kind of joy, I had missed out on a lot of 'ordinary joy' moments. As I focused on them, appreciated them and felt them more fully, I was so happy and sometimes almost overwhelmed at all the joy and blessings in my life."

I remember many years ago hearing a wise teacher give instructions on the Buddhist heart practice called "loving-kindness" or metta meditation. He said that sometimes the word "loving-kindness" can seem so lofty and noble that we imagine it's beyond our reach. He suggested connecting with the simple feeling of "kindness" or "friendliness" towards oneself or others. That's so much more accessible and it will start the gentle flow of good-heartedness we're looking for.

In the Buddhist model of happiness, refined states of well-being are ultimately more sustainable and more satisfying. As wonderful as it is, rapture is considered a coarser level of happiness that, after a while, becomes jarringjangling to the system. Gladness, then happiness, followed by contentment are considered states that are much more developed and fulfilling. Ultimately, deep peace is the most satisfying state of all, and is said to be the precursor to true enlightenment.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Appreciation and gladness for what we already have, and a sense of adventure about the future is the key for well-being of mind and body. Use our Meditation Elixirs (particularly Zen and Higher Guidance) to discover new pathways to joy.

Put Those Sounds Around you and Heal

sound Just tuning in to the latest hits can relax, inspire or motivate you, but there are so many other ways that sound has been used throughout history as a healing modality.

In the middle ages, sacred vibrations in the form of sound were employed as a form of prayer in the powerful Gregorian chants, named after Pope Gregory the Great. An ancient, six tone scale that may be traced to these medieval chants, called the Solfeggio frequencies, is believed to impart spiritual blessing and healing. The mathematical resonances of original Solfeggio frequencies were thought to be capable of elevating ones connection to the Spiritual Divine. Documented results include improved relationships, release from feelings of guilt and shame, and they may also play a role in restoring DNA.

Tibetan singing bowls, made from both crystal and brass and played with a wooden mallet, produce unique, subtle tones that are used to focus attention, reduce stress and improve health. Indigenous tribes have long employed sacred drumming in spiritual and healing ceremonies, and Australian aborigines use the didgeridoo to invoke the sacred and alter consciousness. A research study known as "The Mozart Effect" indicates that listening to this classical genius improves ones execution of certain mental tasks, including problem solving. Baroque classical music is thought to elevate ones mood and productivity.

Music has been compiled to enhance children's learning abilities, as well as to calm animals. The sound of waterfalls and chimes are often used as an environmental relaxer. Tuning forks can be used for Chakra energy balancing. Mantras are used in meditation to raise your vibration, center and balance your energy. "OM", the ancient Sanskrit seed mantra thought to contain all the power of the universe, was recorded by NASA, and interpreted by many, as a sound emanating from the Sun!

This is just a hint of the profound power therapeutic sound can have. Pay attention to the sounds that surround you and take notice of their effect.

This Quantum Life

Take a Moment

moment An article inspired me in this newsletter about joy not having to be an intense experience, and that cultivating an awareness of "okayness" is a valid path to well-being. In fact, unamplified states of gratitude and appreciation for the "little things" in life goes a long way to de-stressing the system, and allowing the body and mind to restore.

I think it is a part of the human condition to strive for intensity of feelings; a way of creating a narrative of grandness and transcendence that rises above the "normal", the "mundane" or "average". It is born out of a numbness to routine, and a sort of blanking out of the repetitive or regular, much like retinal fatigue or the numbness from rubbing an earlobe. Society's highest expectations and rewards are given to those living the most outrageous and intense lives, and we all have embraced this paradigm as a judgment on how we measure up. You know, the "star" factor.

Modern psychologists would chalk these attitudes up to bad mental health, and here's why: Most of what happens to us in our daily lives certainly is unremarkable, and yet we seem to measure our joy factor or happiness factor by how intense our perceptions are as we put a priority on extreme events.

We've all heard people say, "It was really dangerous, but I've never felt so alive." The reality of this is that if this danger you speak of that was making you feel so alive just kept going without respite, the stress of it would certainly kill you.

dangerous Another aspect to this is finding fault with experiences, judging them as "boring" or "monochromatic" or "disappointing" in some way. It's a mind set that has an expectation of intensity that sets a standard against which all experience must measure up. This is validated with TV dramas, big movie adventures, and sweeping novels--all stimulating our nervous systems and exacerbating our sense of the extreme. Our lives by comparison certainly become dull.

Everything Science tells us about the human mind-body system is that excitement, danger, peak experiences, are all stressful to the body; causing the restorative systems to shut down, the adrenaline flight or fight systems to ramp up, leading to cell damage and oxidative stress injuries. The life of the adrenaline junkie is certain to be shorter and less satisfying over the long term.

As an alternative approach, start to become aware of these conditions:

  • At this moment, nothing hurts
  • Right now, I am not upset, and I'm not suffering
  • Nothing is actually bothering me at this moment
  • I don't really need anything right now
  • I'm fine with the way things are right now
  • I'm grateful for just being able to be
  • I appreciate everything around me at this moment
flower When you start breaking it down like this, it becomes apparent that what is really causing any of your well-being and any of your happiness is happening at every moment. Lifting all the judgments about how we're not living up some "superman" or "superwoman" intensity, allows us to become aware of and enjoy those small moments to ourself, and allows these moments to rise to equal priority with moments of intensity.

I'm not saying one shouldn't strive for something fantastic in their life, or plan big adventures. I'm saying that the time between the intensities of life is just as valuable, if not more so in terms of body repair and mental well-being. We tend to forget that this is important admist all the bombardment of MMA fighting, 200 MPH car races, super-hero blockbusters, acid trips and rock star stadium concerts.

Just take a moment, to have a moment.
