Playing Music Has Drastic Effects on the Brain

Science has shown that musical training can change brain structure and function for the better. Furthermore, musicians tend to be more mentally alert, according to new research from a University of Montreal study.

"The more we know about the impact of music on really basic sensory processes, the more we can apply musical training to individuals who might have slower reaction times," said lead researcher Simon Landry. "As people get older, for example, we know their reaction times get slower," said Landry. "So if we know that playing a musical instrument increases reaction times, then maybe playing an instrument will be helpful for them."

Landry found that musicians have faster auditory, tactile, and audio-tactile reaction times. Musicians also have an altered statistical use of multisensory information. This means that they're better at integrating the inputs from various senses.

"Music probably does something unique," explains neuropsychologist Catherine Loveday of the University of Westminster. "It stimulates the brain in a very powerful way because of our emotional connection with it."

Interestingly, even brief periods of musical training can have long-lasting benefits. A 2013 study found that even those with moderate musical training preserved sharp processing of speech sounds. It was also able to increase resilience to any age-related decline in hearing.
Researchers also believe that playing music helps speech processing and learning in children with dyslexia. Furthermore, learning to play an instrument as a child can protect the brain against dementia. "Music reaches parts of the brain that other things can't," says Loveday. "It's a strong cognitive stimulus that grows the brain in a way that nothing else does, and the evidence that musical training enhances things like working memory and language is very robust."

Trees Are Your Friends

ETWe all know that a walk in nature can help slow the maddening pace of modern life and bring us back into the moment, but a recent study tells us just how many trees are necessary to keep us calm. Researchers put people in stressful situations and then showed them 3-D videos of various cityscapes, each with different densities of tree cover. The thicker the tree-cover, the lower the subjects’ stress levels dropped.

The researchers, from the University of Illinois and the University of Hong Kong, subjected 160 participants to various stressful scenarios, including having them prepare to deliver a speech, or perform a math test, in front of judges and cameras. Once the participants were fully stressed out, they viewed one of 10 six-minute videos of city streets that changed only in the amount of tree coverage, ranging from 0 to 70 percent.

What they found was the higher the density of trees, the lower the levels of stress the subjects reported. Inversely, the lower the density of trees, the less helpful the video was in helping the subject recover from stress. While this study, published in Environment and Behavior, was based on self-reported questionnaires, an earlier 2016 study, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, measured reduced physiological markers of stress in subjects simply looking at images of nature.

“The findings suggest that keeping a few snapshots of greenery around your work desk might not be a bad idea. When participants viewed the natural images in the experiment, their stress levels lowered, thanks to the activation of their parasympathetic nervous system--which controls certain rest functions,” Science Alert reports.

You Can't Handle the Truth, So Nature Steps In

perceptionsYour skin feels warm on a summer day because the sun exists. That apple you just tasted sweet and that left juices on your fingers, it must have existed. Our senses tell us that reality is there, and we use reason to fill in the blanks — that is, we know the sun doesn't cease to exist at night even if we can't see it. But cognitive psychologist Donald Hoffman says we're misunderstanding our relationship with objective reality. In fact, he argues that evolution has cloaked us in a perceptional virtual reality. For our own good.

The idea that we can't perceive objective reality in totality isn't new. We know everyone comes installed with cognitive biases and ego defense mechanisms. Our senses can be tricked by mirages and magicians. And for every person who sees a duck, another sees a rabbit. But Hoffman's hypothesis, which he wrote about in a recent issue of New Scientist, takes it a step further. He argues our perceptions don't contain the slightest approximation of reality; rather, they evolved to feed us a collective delusion to improve our fitness.

Using evolutionary game theory, Hoffman and his collaborators created computer simulations to observe how "truth strategies" (which see objective reality as is) compared with "pay-off strategies" (which focus on survival value). The simulations put organisms in an environment with a resource necessary to survival, but only in Goldilocks proportions. Consider water. Too much water, the organism drowns. Too little, it dies of thirst. Between these extremes, the organism slakes its thirst and lives on to breed another day.

Truth-strategy organisms who see the water level on a color scale--from red for low to green for high--see the reality of the water level. However, they don't know whether the water level is high enough to kill them. Pay-off-strategy organisms, conversely, simply see red when water levels would kill them and green for levels that won't. They are better equipped to survive.

"Evolution ruthlessly selects against truth strategies and for pay-off strategies," writes Hoffman. "An organism that sees objective reality is always less fit than an organism of equal complexity that sees fitness pay-offs. Seeing objective reality will make you extinct." Since humans aren't extinct, the simulation suggests we see an approximation of reality that shows us what we need to see, not how things really are.

This Quantum Life

Mindfulness and the Status Quo

mindfulness I ran across an article about mindfulness the other day that kind of boggled my mind with its over-simplicity, snarkiness and, well, rudeness. The author was attempting to make an argument that the current popularity of mindfulness practices is re-enforcing the economic and social status quo, denying social injustices, and is creating a world full of self-centered, passive magical thinkers.

It was like watching someone who has no idea what a football is, lay out an elaborate critique about the football not being round.

This writer had decided that if everyone spent their lives watching their thoughts without judgment, nothing would get changed in the world because there would be no reason to change anything, as if judgmentalism and victimhood were pre-requisites to social change.

He was also writing from a trolling position of "those mindfulness people", obviously without having ever done the practice. I would like to point out to this unfortunately misinformed critic that the practice of mindfulness is probably the world's best hope for survival.

If all the world's leaders were able to sit together in mindful non-judgment about the state of the world, wouldn't you think things would change, not only politically, but economically as well?

Being in non-judgment doesn't mean to stop caring about injustices, prejudices, and "evil" in the world--on the contrary, non-judgment comes from a place of non-duality, where the naked truth of a situation can be revealed in all its ugliness or beauty. From there, the mindful person can then make a choice as to what is desired in one's personal life and the world at large.

The other vital characteristic of mindfulness is becoming aware of one's personal dark side--the habitual monkey-ninded diatribe of negativity that pulls a person into depression, hopelessness and apathy. By observing such automatic thoughts and feelings without judgment, they can be seen for what they nearly always are: a cry for love. By acknowledging these thoughts and feelings, it reduces their frequency, neutralizes their power, and reveals the trauma and hurt crying out for a loving embrace.

Another argument was centered around being "happy" with any negative situation, so that the mindful person has no motivation to change anything. This just points up the author's ignorance of the practice. Remember that "Kung Fu" TV episode when Cain is put in jail? He sat down and went into meditation, becoming hyper-aware of his surroundings, he was then able to find a way to harmlessly break out of the prison. This is what mindfulness provides: a way to use the mind to look at all aspects of a situation--without denial, without judgment--so that all perceptions and powers can come to bear on a problem.

The author also had a problem with the meme, "Happiness is an inside job", as if a person can only achieve happiness by controlling outside circumstances. This, of course, is backwards. By "being OK" with one's predicament is not saying they are satisfied with it. The "being OK" means that all facets of a situation--both positive or negative--can be observed with equanimity and then intelligent choices made to change or not change it. Personally, if I'm experiencing a negative circumstance, I would much rather "get my mind right" about it by achieving peaceful allowance of it so that all the possibilities for action can be considered. Otherwise, I'd just be throwing my fists wildly in the air in hopes of hitting something--and I've been there, believe me!

Mindfulness is a vital practice, and anyone who says different is advocating for self-ignorance, low intelligence, and warlike approaches to the world's problems. It is important to allow that many people do have these non-mindful views, because by being OK with them allows us to see the pain and injustices that must have been at their genesis.

Peaceful Protests Beat Violent Ones--By A Lot

peaceful protest Compelling research by Erica Chenoweth, a political scientist at Harvard University, confirms that civil disobedience is not only the moral choice; it is also the most powerful way of shaping world politics--by a long way. Looking at hundreds of campaigns over the last century, Chenoweth found that nonviolent campaigns are twice as likely to achieve their goals as violent campaigns. And although the exact dynamics will depend on many factors, she has shown it takes around 3.5% of the population actively participating in the protests to ensure serious political change.

Overall, nonviolent campaigns were twice as likely to succeed as violent campaigns: they led to political change 53% of the time compared to 26% for the violent protests. This was partly the result of strength in numbers. Chenoweth argues that nonviolent campaigns are more likely to succeed because they can recruit many more participants from a much broader demographic, which can cause severe disruption that paralyses normal urban life and the functioning of society.

In fact, of the 25 largest campaigns that they studied, 20 were nonviolent, and 14 of these were outright successes. Overall, the nonviolent campaigns attracted around four times as many participants (200,000) as the average violent campaign (50,000).

"There weren't any campaigns that had failed after they had achieved 3.5% participation during a peak event," says Chenoweth--a phenomenon she has called the "3.5% rule". Ultimately, she would like our history books to pay greater attention to nonviolent campaigns rather than concentrating so heavily on warfare. "So many of the histories that we tell one another focus on violence--and even if it is a total disaster, we still find a way to find victories within it," she says. Yet we tend to ignore the success of peaceful protest, she says.

"Ordinary people, all the time, are engaging in pretty heroic activities that are actually changing the way the world is run-–and those deserve some notice and celebration as well."

Mindfulness and Meditation Grade School Curriculum

kids meditation Most of the time, when children act out by kicking and screaming expletives, it is because they do not understand what they are going through, and cannot find a better way to release their feelings. When a child acts out, know that it is most likely because they are struggling to understand complex emotions that they are feeling for the first time in their lives.

Schools in England have started to tackle this problem in a new way, and that is by teaching mindfulness and meditation in the classroom to improve the youth's overall mental health. In 370 schools across the country, children will be taught how to meditate, techniques for muscle relaxation and breathing exercises for mindfulness. The secondary school students will also get a more hands-on education to learn about awareness and how to increase this in their everyday lives. This program is being done under the mental health study that the British government is running up until 2021.

England isn't the only country that has added mindfulness as a subject among schools. In 2016, a school in Baltimore decided to replace detention for an area where the children could go to an practice some breathing and stretching exercises instead. This is a way to keep the students calmer in order to increase their focus within the classroom.

A student that was sent to the "mindful moment room" for pushing and name-calling a fellow classmate describes it to CNN as: "I did some deep breathing, had a little snack, and I got myself together. Then I apologized to my class."

The school believes rather than punishing and embarrassing the child in front of their peers, which was probably the cause of the problem from the very beginning, a self-assessment, mindfulness approach with silent meditation is far more useful. Teaching children how to deal with emotions will most likely be very foreign and uncomfortable, but it will reap the benefits in the end. The goal is to have the children master the habit of clearing their mind from stress and anxiety, and being present and more focused in class.

Awakening Ikigai

meaningful life In Japan, the secret to living a longer, happier and more fulfilled life can be summed up in one word: Ikigai. In Japanese, iki means "to live" and gai means "reason"--in other words, your reason to live. This ideology dates to the Heian period (A.D. 794 to 1185), but only in the past decade has it gained attention from millions around the world. The ikigai way of life is especially prominent Okinawa, in a group of islands south of mainland Japan. (It has also been nicknamed the "Land of Immortals" because it has among the longest lifespans and highest rates of centenarians in the world.)

In a 2008 study from Tohoku University, researchers analyzed data from more than 50,000 participants (ages 40 to 79) and found that those who reported having ikigai in their lives had reduced risks of cardiovascular diseases and lower mortality rates. Put another way, 95% of respondents who had ikigai were still alive seven years after the initial survey compared to the 83% who didn't.

The Ikigai Way

Adults and Kids are Meditating More than Ever

meditation kid In the last 5 years, the number of American adults and children who practice meditation has significantly increased. This is known through the results of a questionnaire administered by the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) every 5 years. Thousands of Americans respond to questions about their health, wellness, and illness-related experiences. Results indicate that about 14 percent of adults practiced yoga and meditation in 2017. That’s up from about 9.5 percent and 4 percent respectively compared to a similar survey fielded five years ago.

"The survey data suggest that more people are turning to mind and body approaches than ever before," NCCIH acting director David Shurtleff said in a press release.

Here are some further details from the report regarding adults:

  • Yoga was the most commonly used complementary health approach among U.S. adults in 2012 (9.5 percent) and 2017 (14.3 percent).
  • The use of meditation increased more than threefold from 4.1 percent in 2012 to 14.2 percent in 2017.

Short Primer on Basic Brainwave States

brainwaves Knowing how to identify your brainwave state is the first step in consciously shifting it. All of our thoughts, emotions and behaviors are rooted in the communication between neurons. Naturally occurring brain chemicals influence our moods but there is also an electrical component associated with brainwave frequency that is worth exploring.

Alpha is about relaxation, imagination, visualization. This slow cycle of brain wave is 7-12 HZ (beats per second) is also associated with peace, safety and is a great state of mind for relieving stress. It is also present when people watch movies or television. It is considered a gateway to deeper realms of consciousness and the Schuman Resonance which is the resonant frequency of the earth’s electromagnetic field. This state is essential to well-being.

Beta is mostly associated with concentration, cognition, alertness, and focus. This state of mind allows you to make connections quickly and come up with solutions and ideas. People Are Knowingly Taking Placebo Pills for Healing

placebo Time magazine recently published an article about a woman (now a 71-year old medical assistant) and her struggle with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). She tried everything, from drugs to changing her diet. It was a horrible way to live, she told the Times, as she was often huddled in a corner and keeled over in pain. It’s something that can really debilitate your life. Approximately ten years ago today, she decided to enroll herself into a study, a first of its kind clinical trial, one where the patient would be receiving a placebo pill. The pill had no active ingredients, and she felt "deflated," that she got her hopes up for nothing. Three weeks later, after taking the pill twice daily, Buonanno (the 71-year old medical assistant) was symptom free. She had never gone so long without an attack. "I didn’t have a clue what was going on," she says. "I still don’t."

The placebo effect is a non-therapeutic treatment (like a sham pill), and it improves a patient’s physical condition. This has been documented for centuries. The interesting thing about the study the woman decided to participate in, is the fact that patients taking the placebo pill were well aware that they were taking a placebo. With traditional placebo studies, patients are made to believe that they are taking something that will benefit them and improve their condition. In 2009, Harvard Medical School launched the first open-label placebo, where patients knew what they were taking, and they started with people who had IBS, including the 71- year old woman. As Time points out,

The findings were surprising. Nearly twice as many people in the trial who knowingly received placebo pills reported experiencing adequate symptom relief, compared with the people who received no treatment. Not only that but the men and women taking the placebo also doubled their rates of improvement to a point that was about equal to the effects of two IBS medications that were commonly used at the time.

The team of researchers, alongside a team at the Program in Placebo Studies and Therapeutic Encounter at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, have secured a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to replicate the study mentioned above. So far, researchers have treated 270 patients and intend to treat approximately 100 more with IBV via their ongoing clinical trial.

journaling Regardless of your writing ability, the process of writing down one's thoughts is an age-old, tried and true way of self inquiry. Often, you'll find yourself revealing a deep truth about life, a sub-conscious pattern or other conundrum by simply writing about it. Many proponents of this method insist that the best way to write is by hand with a pen or pencil--believing that the physical motions in some way amplify the psychological powers engaged in attempting to language our thoughts. I do not hold this belief myself, and prefer to type, and sometimes read what I typed out loud, even recording it a la podcast, and listening to it back. The mechanism at work here is "mirroring". By mirroring our thoughts "out in the physical world", it allows us to perceive our awarenesses and conclusions from a different angle, or perspective, thus giving us insights we would not necessarily have otherwise. The process of self-mirroring is really another way of Two Pointing, with one point being what is happening in the imagination, and the other point being the written version of it. Journaling is especially effective when there is a confusion of energies, or there is something about what you are experiencing that is a problem, conundrum or conflict. Write all about the different aspects of your feelings about the subject, and you are sure to come to some new awarenesses about the situation. You can then apply more tools as needed to clear any stuck energies. I would also add drawing to this hack, and even if you have absolutely no "talent" for drawing, there is a way to do it that is highly therapeutic. Falling into the category of "automatic writing", by "randomly" drawing lines and shapes, you are essentially two-pointing subconscious patterns. Of course, you don't need to limit this to random lines and shapes--drawing objects or imaginings is also therapeutic. Focus in on a particular feeling or experience, and then just allow the pen or pencil to move across the paper. Observe the designs made, and let them bring you new awarenesses. Do-It-Yourself Music Therapy

music therapy Dr. Kniffin and his colleagues from Cornwell University, Dr. Jubo Yan, Dr. Brian Wansink, and Dr. William Schulze, referenced two separate studies that they spearheaded to evaluate the influence of different types of music on the cooperative behavior of 266 people.

In each study, the participants were organized into groups of three and given tokens. The members of each group were presented with "multiple opportunities to contribute to the team's value" by using the tokens. They also had the options to keep the tokens for themselves.

In both studies, when music like Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl, which has an upbeat tune and is deemed a "happy" song, is played, the chances that team members would use the tokens to boost the group's value was higher, unlike when "unpleasant" music was played or if there was no music at all. This proves that happy music can encourage employees to make decisions that can benefit the whole team.

Dr. Kniffin shares that "music with rhythm" often boosts a person's mood, and the results of their studies reveal that there is a higher chance that individuals can work well together once they're listening to music that has a steady beat.

Dr. Wasink, study co-author and director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, notes that aside from having a scientific reason to let employees listen to some music while they're working, happy music is an effective way of fostering cooperation among workers and positively influencing their mood.

If you want to improve your own mood with music therapy, try some of these tips:

- Play some soft, relaxing music at a moderate level. Make sure that the volume isn't high enough to distract you and that you can hear the melody or instrumental. Find a quiet space and sit comfortably. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing as you try to harmonize with the music. Relax and free your mind from worries.
- Try to learn how to play an instrument. If you're feeling down, rocking out on a guitar or trying out some melodies on a ukelele can help cheer you up. Playing an instrument is just another way to help you channel your creativity and it can also help you de-stress when you are feeling overwhelmed.
- Listen to upbeat music that you can dance to. Clear some space in the living room, play some of your favorite songs, and dance your worries away.
- Listen to music while you're doing one or a couple of your daily activities. Enjoy some music whether you're washing the dishes or working out. Keep in mind that this will only work if you choose music that "complements" the task, such as classical music when you're starting a project for the office or an upbeat playlist when you're shooting some hoops.

The Power of Breathing

breath Here are some sample medicinal breathwork techniques that are examples of medicinal breathwork techniques to simply and intentionally activate the rest-and-digest response to take the body out of "fight or flight" stress response.

1. Exhale focus. Breathe naturally without thinking about the breath or deliberately making it wispy, extended, and long. Just lightly place your intent on the exhale. People sigh in relief (exhale) and gasp in terror (inhale). One leads to "rest and digest" and the other to "fight or flight."

2. Sink the qi. With each exhale, place your intent in the gut or sacral chakra, which is three inches below the belly button and in between the front and back of the abdomen. Then imagine a light bulb going on there with every exhale--feel free to use any other similar visualization that resonates with you. In "fight or flight," all the qi or energy in the body rises up toward the head and heart. It's common for your face to flush and head to feel swollen as your heart rate and blood pressure increases. By guiding qi back down, the body can relieve itself of the intense energy needed for "fight or flight" and divert it to fuel a "rest-and-digest" response.

3. Release tension. With each exhale, find and release a bit more tension. This can happen area by area or totally randomly. The task is to be mindful of sensation anywhere in your body. Think about the way your whole face feels when unclenching your teeth--that's what we're going for in other areas. In each part of the body where tension is released, blockages open, stagnation is cleared, and the flow of qi improves, and the ancient texts say that health and vitality returns.

Nature and Nurture Found to be Inextricably Linked

nature or nurture Are you the way you are because of the genes you inherited from your parents or because of the experiences you have had in your life? That has been the question asked for hundreds of years in the nature vs. nurture debate. Yet, this is where it gets quite fascinating. It turns out that nature and nurture are inextricably intertwined.

This is very apparent in an experiment done in 2013. Mice have a mutated gene called the agouti gene which makes them yellow in color, prone to diabetes and other diseases, and obese. In a study of epigenetics in agouti mice, cloned mice--that is, genetically identical mice to the agouti mice in the experiment--were given different nutrients than the control study, and they slowly began to change into non-obese mice.

One could argue that this epigenetic (outside regular genetic) change was simply due to nutrient density and the associated physiological changes, but this experiment has been conducted again in various forms using environmental cues such as love, anger, poverty, and more. Each of these emotional nutrients--as we'll label them--result in changes in the genome. Researchers are even now discovering an epigenetic connection between DNA methylation of the serotonin transporter gene and how we respond to stress.

The genome adapts to both intrinsic and environmental signals. This means that you are a product of both nature and nurture because nature will always respond to how you are cared for and loved (even by yourself) or ignored, hated, feared, abandoned, etc.

It is now known that our epigenetic memories are passed down through our DNA. Scientists have recently observed this happening for at least 14 generations! Can you even imagine what kind of stresses or lifestyle your grandparents, great grandparents, great great grandparents were enduring, that then imprinted upon your genes and created a chemical signal that can incite either stress or relaxation and joy in you?

Some of those inherited environmental traits were passed down through nature, and are now in you. There are those which will make you respond to challenges in a heroic way and those that will make you crumble with the weight of a feather. Just knowing that your DNA has been altered by the experiences of your ancestors can seem daunting, but it also gives you the power to change maladaptive responses that may have been created when your great-great-great-great-great grandmother was running from a tiger, or your uncle ten times removed endured a six-month-long famine in the desert during an extended absence of rain.

Now that you know this, you can choose a different response, and start a new chain of positive adaptation--DNA mutation, if you will--that allows you to stay calm under any circumstance. This new trait can then be passed down to future generations, as well as alter the DNA of your relatives.

kinesology The body can use many methods to signal you as to its knowledge and awareness about something. In kinesiology, it's "weak" and "strong". The body will go weak when addressing something not good for it, and will remain strong when it's something good for it. There are many demonstrations of way to access this response on YouTube, but I have my favorites. One is the index finger to thumb method. Place the pad of your thumb over the nail on your index finger. Then, "flick" the index finger off the thumb. You are attempting to hold the index finger with the pad of the thumb. When there is a weak response, you will not be able to hold the index finger on the thumb. When there is a strong response, you'll be able to hold the index finger on the thumb. To begin using this method, you'll need a reference as to what the "strong" and "weak" signals are. A simple test is to hold the index finger with the thumb pad and test the statement: My name is JOE (a name not yours). You'll find there is a weak response, and you will not be able to hold the index finger with the thumb pad. This will calibrate how much strength to use while holding the index finger with the thumb pad. You can use this method to find out "yes" and "no" answers about virtually anything, and those answers will be uncannily accurate. Although I mostly use this technique when it comes to shopping for food for the body to eat, it's great for selecting restaurants, car mechanics, TV shows, well, anything. Breathing: The Underrated Healer

breathing The breath is one of the most underrated and under-utilized methods of healing. However, something as simple as breathing can help those who suffer from severe mental conditions, garden variety anxiety and stress, to severe traumas. There are many forms of breathwork, so we call this one, "resonant breathing". This specific style of breathwork came from years of studying the ancient breathing practices of indigenous people all over the world including those from African, Hawaiian, and Native American traditions.

A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary medicine in 2017 led by researchers from Boston University asked 30 people with major depression to practice the breathing technique regularly as well as Iyengar yoga. After 3 months, results from a standard depression inventory test showed how the depressive symptoms had significantly declined.

Even though the study size was very small, it is comforting to know that something as simple as breath alone could help to alleviate symptoms of severe depression. No pills needed. This technique is especially powerful because it can be practiced anytime, anywhere. The process involved taking regular breaths in and out of the nose, at a pace of 5 breaths per minute, each breath in and out taking around 6 seconds. The breath should be calm and gentle because the goal is to balance the sympathetic--fight or flight with the parasympathetic--rest and digest areas of the nervous system.

Gerbarg and Brown believe that the reason this technique works is thanks to the vagal nerves, those connecting the brain to the body and what tell the organs when to beat, digest, breathe and all other functions, have been found in recent years to send even more messages in the opposite direction from the body to the brain. "These ascending messages strongly influence stress response, emotion and neurohormonal regulatory networks," stated in a book written by the couple, Yoga Therapy: Theory and Practice.

According to Gerbarg, "Respiration is the only autonomic function we can voluntarily control," it’s easy to see how changing the breathing pattern can shift the messages received by the brain.

You Are Hallucinating Your Reality

The theory of our experiences being hallucinations was put forth at a couple of science symposiums over the last two months. The theory attempts to de-construct how human perception is understood.

One of the keys is "predictive processing" that challenges our intuitive feeling that our brains passively receive information (via our senses) and create perceptions of what is actually out there--the so-called bottom-up approach. Instead, predictive processing argues that perception, action and cognition are the outcome of computations in the brain involving both bottom-up and top-down processing, in which prior knowledge about the world and our own cognitive and emotional state influence perception.

As researchers Metzinger and Wiese point out, the idea of top-down processing is not new, but "dominant theories of perception have for a long time marginalized" its role. The novel contribution of predictive processing, they report, is that it emphasises the importance of top-down processing and prior knowledge as a feature of perception, one which is present all the time--not only when sensory input is noisy or ambiguous.

In a nutshell, the brain builds models of the environment and the body, which it uses to make hypotheses about the source of sensations. The hypothesis that is deemed most likely becomes a perception of external reality. Of course, the prediction could be accurate or awry, and it is the brain's job to correct for any errors--after making a mistake, it can modify its models to account better for similar situations in the future.

But some models cannot be changed willy-nilly, for example, those of our internal organs. Our body needs to remain in a narrow temperature range around 98°F, so predictive processing achieves such control by predicting that, say, the sensations on our skin should be in line with normal body temperature. When the sensations deviate, the brain doesn’t change its internal model, but rather forces us to move towards warmth or cold, so that the predictions fall in line with the required physiological state.

If you do get through enough of the papers to understand the computational principles behind predictive processing then, as Metzinger and Wiese put it, you get closer to understanding why "it is only a small step towards describing processing in the brain as a controlled online hallucination". Everything we perceive, including ourselves, are simulacrums of reality. The takeaway here is this wild thought: we are always hallucinating.

Breathing Is Not Just for Oxygen Anymore...

breathing Northwestern Medicine scientists have discovered for the first time that the rhythm of breathing creates electrical activity in the human brain that enhances emotional judgments and memory recall. These effects on behavior depend critically on whether you inhale or exhale and whether you breathe through the nose or mouth.

In the study, individuals were able to identify a fearful face more quickly if they encountered the face when breathing in compared to breathing out. Individuals also were more likely to remember an object if they encountered it on the inhaled breath than the exhaled one. The effect disappeared if breathing was through the mouth.

“One of the major findings in this study is that there is a dramatic difference in brain activity in the amygdala and hippocampus during inhalation compared with exhalation,” said lead author Christina Zelano, assistant professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “When you breathe in, we discovered you are stimulating neurons in the olfactory cortex, amygdala and hippocampus, all across the limbic system.”

Northwestern scientists first discovered these differences in brain activity while studying seven patients with epilepsy who were scheduled for brain surgery. The recorded electrical signals showed brain activity fluctuated with breathing. The activity occurs in brain areas where emotions, memory and smells are processed. This discovery led scientists to ask whether cognitive functions typically associated with these brain areas--in particular fear processing and memory--could also be affected by breathing.

Scientists asked about 60 subjects to make rapid decisions on emotional expressions in the lab environment while recording their breathing. Presented with pictures of faces showing expressions of either fear or surprise, the subjects had to indicate, as quickly as they could, which emotion each face was expressing. When faces were encountered during inhalation, subjects recognized them as fearful more quickly than when faces were encountered during exhalation. This was not true for faces expressing surprise. These effects diminished when subjects performed the same task while breathing through their mouths. Thus the effect was specific to fearful stimuli during nasal breathing only.

Another potential insight of the research is on the basic mechanisms of meditation or focused breathing. "When you inhale, you are in a sense synchronizing brain oscillations across the limbic network," Zelano noted.

6 Red Flags About Choosing a Healer

shaman How do we tell the difference between an ethical, heart-centered healing practitioner or other spiritual mentor, and one who is interested in (or addicted to) sucking others' energy by way of wearing the "costume" of a spiritual leader, or healer, or teacher, or shaman, or guru?

Red flags to consider:

1. Needs to claim superiority/inferiority with regards to another. In my experience, someone who is centered in their own heartspace and aligned with their own power with regards to their healing work, teachings, and offerings will not attempt to leverage themselves into a position where they are “above” another in a hierarchical sense, by claiming that they are privy to realms of holiness, divinity, and power that are categorically not available to others—as a means of trying to gain control or power. They will not make claims to be more “advanced,” “awake,” or “evolved” than another.

2) Believes that their path is the only way to enlightenment. Recently, I encountered a a guru who claimed that he was a “level 10” of enlightenment, whereas everyone around him was at a much lower level of five or six on whatever arbitrary scale of enlightenment he was using.

3) The talk doesn’t match the walk. If a teacher or healing practitioner claims to be loving, do they then uphold this with grace toward those around them, including their clients? Do we see the evidence of this in the fruits of their life? Can they allow healthful dissent and disagreement? Do they have grounded, real love, stability, and fulfillment in their lives? Do they lead by example, rooted in the sort of life that you yourself would like to lead?

4) Boundary violations. This brings me to another huge point: the tendency for many so-called spiritual masters and teachers to routinely violate—or in subtle ways to promote the violation of—others’ boundaries. These types will often demote “selfhood” and personal identity in favor of an undifferentiated “oneness” that creates confusion about where the client ends and the healer begins, which sets up a dynamic of easy predation. This is particularly easy to implement in the case in which the client is an abuse survivor, already wounded with regards to boundaries and holding an underdeveloped sense of self.

5) Exhibits coldness and/or cannot account for their own shadow. Another big question to ask is, does the spiritual mentor in question admit to you and freely own his or her shadow? Do they admit to being human, to having human needs, frailties, failings, room for growth, a path of learning of their own through which they learn how to more closely embody the truth that they have learned in the first person?

6) Lives a kind of life you don’t personally wish to lead. The teacher or healing practitioner you choose is ultimately someone you might like to more closely resemble. This needs to go deeper than just looking “successful” in terms of having money, a pretty person on their arm, and the right kind of house or car. It needs to be bone-deep.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: The old saying, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear," is an interesting observation, yet many "Teachers" can abuse this relationship. Reverse Your Roles -- What would I want him/her to say to me? If you’d want to be asked the question, then why not ask it yourself? Returning to the present conversation by displaying such respect and empathy for the other person, in turn displaying your communication and understanding skills, is a great way to be in the present moment. At the same time, you can feel somewhat confident you’re making a quality connection.

Engage in Deliciously Positive Self-Talk -- Engaging in positive self-talk can keep your spirits higher than average, especially in the present moment. For example, consciously being grateful often is one of the ways you can enjoy positivity and happiness more often. Further, learning the art of positive self-talk can help you create and reach new goals by the motivation it generates.

Acknowledge all the Different Emotions in Yourself and in Others -- When we acknowledge emotions in ourselves and verbally or non-verbally in others, we demonstrate that we see value in and understand ourselves and others. Try to acknowledge feelings, listen, and be there for yourself, first, and then for others. Expressing understanding in this way can be very liberating, releasing baggage from your shoulders and allowing meaningful connections to take place with so many others.
