The term "psi" refers to any psychic phenomenon, such as psychokinesis, telepathy, or clairvoyance. Skeptics, or debunkers, have often dismissed psi based on failed attempts to replicate experiments that give evidence psi exists.
Dr. Garret Moddel at the University of Colorado says, however, that the experimenter effect is part of what could be at play in these failed tests. Furthermore, the subjects’ belief or disbelief in psi may influence their abilities to perform psi tasks.
His student tested 12 subjects, asking them to guess which cards were being held up without being able to see the cards. The subjects were asked beforehand whether they believed in psi. Regardless of their answers, they were randomly given brief literature either in support of psi research or against it, each citing various studies as evidence. Thus the subjects were divided into four groups.
The believers presented with pro-psi literature guessed the cards correctly 27 percent of the time. By random chance, they would be expected to guess correctly 20 percent of the time. The odds against chance are 25 to 1. This is considered a statistically significant result in support of psi.
The other three groups—those either predisposed to disbelief or those given literature to stoke their doubts just before the experiment—were pretty close to random chance in their number of correct guesses.
Dr. Moddel told Skeptico in 2010: "You know, this whole argument about psi needing replicability, I think is to some extent, a red herring … As this and other experiments show, psi is intention-based and it’s based upon not only the intention of the subject, but the intention of the experimenter.

Scientists explain how parallel worlds could affect this world
Quantum mechanics, though firmly tested, is so weird and anti-intuitive that famed physicist Richard Feynman once remarked, "I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics." Attempts to explain some of the bizarre consequences of quantum theory have led to some mind-bending ideas, such as the Copenhagen interpretation and the many-worlds interpretation.
Now there's a new theory on the block, called the "many interacting worlds" hypothesis (MIW), and the idea is just as profound as it sounds. The theory suggests not only that parallel worlds exist, but that they interact with our world on the quantum level and are thus detectable. Though still speculative, the theory may help to finally explain some of the bizarre consequences inherent in quantum mechanics, reports RT.com.
The theory is a spinoff of the many-worlds interpretation in quantum mechanics — an idea that posits that all possible alternative histories and futures are real, each representing an actual, though parallel, world. One problem with the many-worlds interpretation, however, has been that it is fundamentally untestable, since observations can only be made in our world. Happenings in these proposed "parallel" worlds can thus only be imagined.
MIW, however, says otherwise. It suggests that parallel worlds can interact on the quantum level, and in fact that they do. Whether or not the math holds true will be the ultimate test for this theory. Does it or does it not properly predict quantum effects mathematically? But the theory is certain to provide plenty of fodder for the imagination.
For instance, when asked about whether their theory might entail the possibility that humans could someday interact with other worlds, Wiseman said: "It's not part of our theory. But the idea of [human] interactions with other universes is no longer pure fantasy."
What might your life look like if you made different choices? Maybe one day you'll be able to look into one of these alternative worlds and find out.
Mayo Clinic's mind-body approach to happiness
A group at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has determined four key steps to achieving happiness. Dr. Amit Sood, who leads a team of researchers at Mayo, believes happiness is a choice and, in fact, says that forty to fifty percent of people's happiness rests on the deliberate decisions they make day after day.
Dr. Sood has taken the four-steps and developed a comprehensive ten-week program to change your mindset and let a positive attitude become habit. The program is outlined in the new book The Mayo Clinic Handbook for Happiness: A 4-Step Plan for Resilient Living which puts forth practical guidelines that are easy to implement into mundane moments—while waiting for an elevator, or folding laundry.
- Train Your Attention: Learning to focus your attention enables you to command your thoughts and shift perspective.
- Cultivate Emotional Resilience: Build inner emotional strength by making room for gratitude, compassion, acceptance, meaning, and forgiveness.
- Start a Mind-Body Practice: Deepen your spiritual awareness through meditation, prayer, or any other mind-body practices that work for you.
- Pick Healthy Habits: Direct your willpower to making positive, concrete changes to lead to a healthier you—eat well, exercise, worry less.
