Restorative Yoga: Beyond Exercise

relax

It's called restorative yoga. The goal is total relaxation: laying in a dimly lit room, listening to either silence or calming music (Enya is the obvious the go-to; and yes, she's still making music) with a blanket draped over you and firm pillows, called bolsters, to support your body. The restoration comes in the state of being just before falling asleep. Getting there is harder than it looks.

According to April Reiersen, a New York City-based family nurse practitioner with a holistic specialty and a 500-hour registered yoga teacher with training in restorative yoga, this practice facilitates a quality of physical and mental rest that promotes balance in the nervous system response.

"It's a recalibration of the body's physiological response to stress, away from reactive patterns that lead to chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system-rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, tense muscles, and slow digestion," Reiersen says in an interview with The Daily Beast. "This 'fight or flight' response is key to human survival; however, when we remain in these states of chronic stress long-term, it is a setup for disease in the body," she adds.

The science behind mind-body medicine is rapidly growing. Reiersen cites rising consensus around the undeniable link between state of mind and health of the body. Studies in psychoneuroimmunology and psychoneuroendocrinology show improved immune responses and balanced hormones, respectively. She considers the art of relaxing as a form of preventative medicine.

"Chronic stress triggers inflammatory responses, and increased inflammation plays a central role in many diseases. Studies have shown that relaxation therapies promote a decrease in inflammatory signaling in stressful situations. When the body is allowed to rest we see a physiologic response that promotes the health and healing of the body," Reiersen explains. In many ways, it's easier to exercise--the act of movement--than face the stressors of life head on through a more passive practice like restorative yoga. This may be because we never really learned how to handle stress without exercise. We never learned how to be ok with being still.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: The stress that can really damage health is the stress we have gotten used to. With mindful resting, one becomes aware of new places where stress has taken up residence in the body. Use our E-1 Formula (Stress Relief) to harmonize and balance body systems that are out of whack.

Joy Does Not Have to Be Intensity

okayness We find what we look for. Neuroscience calls this phenomenon the brain's "confirmation bias". Your brain tends to see what it believes to be true and misses whatever doesn't confirm its hypothesis. If you don't think you experience much true happiness because you're holding an image that it should be a peak experience of ecstasy, you probably will keep confirming that belief.

However, if you see moments of "okayness"--moments where you're not suffering--as moments worthy of appreciation, you open the channel to true well-being. And the more you notice and take them in, the stronger that flow of true well-being naturally becomes--not through force but through wise attention. As neuroscience expert Rick Hanson says: "The brain is like Teflon for positive experiences and Velcro for negative ones."

When you let go of looking for ecstatic states, you can find joy in the most commonplace moments. Edith, a student in Germany, had somehow equated joy with intense positive experiences. But when she stopped looking for those and just opened up to a simple feeling of well-being she started to experience things very differently. She put it this way:

"I noticed how much joy there already is and how I had somehow looked for a kind of super-mundane, 'spiritual' joy, more profound and lasting than our ordinary joy, that I would only reach if I practiced hard and in the right way. By having this concept, and by looking for this other kind of joy, I had missed out on a lot of 'ordinary joy' moments. As I focused on them, appreciated them and felt them more fully, I was so happy and sometimes almost overwhelmed at all the joy and blessings in my life."

I remember many years ago hearing a wise teacher give instructions on the Buddhist heart practice called "loving-kindness" or metta meditation. He said that sometimes the word "loving-kindness" can seem so lofty and noble that we imagine it's beyond our reach. He suggested connecting with the simple feeling of "kindness" or "friendliness" towards oneself or others. That's so much more accessible and it will start the gentle flow of good-heartedness we're looking for.

In the Buddhist model of happiness, refined states of well-being are ultimately more sustainable and more satisfying. As wonderful as it is, rapture is considered a coarser level of happiness that, after a while, becomes jarringjangling to the system. Gladness, then happiness, followed by contentment are considered states that are much more developed and fulfilling. Ultimately, deep peace is the most satisfying state of all, and is said to be the precursor to true enlightenment.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Appreciation and gladness for what we already have, and a sense of adventure about the future is the key for well-being of mind and body. Use our Meditation Elixirs (particularly Zen and Higher Guidance) to discover new pathways to joy.

Put Those Sounds Around you and Heal

sound Just tuning in to the latest hits can relax, inspire or motivate you, but there are so many other ways that sound has been used throughout history as a healing modality.

In the middle ages, sacred vibrations in the form of sound were employed as a form of prayer in the powerful Gregorian chants, named after Pope Gregory the Great. An ancient, six tone scale that may be traced to these medieval chants, called the Solfeggio frequencies, is believed to impart spiritual blessing and healing. The mathematical resonances of original Solfeggio frequencies were thought to be capable of elevating ones connection to the Spiritual Divine. Documented results include improved relationships, release from feelings of guilt and shame, and they may also play a role in restoring DNA.

Tibetan singing bowls, made from both crystal and brass and played with a wooden mallet, produce unique, subtle tones that are used to focus attention, reduce stress and improve health. Indigenous tribes have long employed sacred drumming in spiritual and healing ceremonies, and Australian aborigines use the didgeridoo to invoke the sacred and alter consciousness. A research study known as "The Mozart Effect" indicates that listening to this classical genius improves ones execution of certain mental tasks, including problem solving. Baroque classical music is thought to elevate ones mood and productivity.

Music has been compiled to enhance children's learning abilities, as well as to calm animals. The sound of waterfalls and chimes are often used as an environmental relaxer. Tuning forks can be used for Chakra energy balancing. Mantras are used in meditation to raise your vibration, center and balance your energy. "OM", the ancient Sanskrit seed mantra thought to contain all the power of the universe, was recorded by NASA, and interpreted by many, as a sound emanating from the Sun!

This is just a hint of the profound power therapeutic sound can have. Pay attention to the sounds that surround you and take notice of their effect.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Create a clear, clean space with our Clean Sweep spray, then delve into some of these sources of sounds as a daily meditation.

Take a Moment

moment An article inspired me in this newsletter about joy not having to be an intense experience, and that cultivating an awareness of "okayness" is a valid path to well-being. In fact, unamplified states of gratitude and appreciation for the "little things" in life goes a long way to de-stressing the system, and allowing the body and mind to restore.

I think it is a part of the human condition to strive for intensity of feelings; a way of creating a narrative of grandness and transcendence that rises above the "normal", the "mundane" or "average". It is born out of a numbness to routine, and a sort of blanking out of the repetitive or regular, much like retinal fatigue or the numbness from rubbing an earlobe. Society's highest expectations and rewards are given to those living the most outrageous and intense lives, and we all have embraced this paradigm as a judgment on how we measure up. You know, the "star" factor.

Modern psychologists would chalk these attitudes up to bad mental health, and here's why: Most of what happens to us in our daily lives certainly is unremarkable, and yet we seem to measure our joy factor or happiness factor by how intense our perceptions are as we put a priority on extreme events.

We've all heard people say, "It was really dangerous, but I've never felt so alive." The reality of this is that if this danger you speak of that was making you feel so alive just kept going without respite, the stress of it would certainly kill you.

dangerous Another aspect to this is finding fault with experiences, judging them as "boring" or "monochromatic" or "disappointing" in some way. It's a mind set that has an expectation of intensity that sets a standard against which all experience must measure up. This is validated with TV dramas, big movie adventures, and sweeping novels--all stimulating our nervous systems and exacerbating our sense of the extreme. Our lives by comparison certainly become dull.

Everything Science tells us about the human mind-body system is that excitement, danger, peak experiences, are all stressful to the body; causing the restorative systems to shut down, the adrenaline flight or fight systems to ramp up, leading to cell damage and oxidative stress injuries. The life of the adrenaline junkie is certain to be shorter and less satisfying over the long term.

As an alternative approach, start to become aware of these conditions:

  • At this moment, nothing hurts
  • Right now, I am not upset, and I'm not suffering
  • Nothing is actually bothering me at this moment
  • I don't really need anything right now
  • I'm fine with the way things are right now
  • I'm grateful for just being able to be
  • I appreciate everything around me at this moment
flower When you start breaking it down like this, it becomes apparent that what is really causing any of your well-being and any of your happiness is happening at every moment. Lifting all the judgments about how we're not living up some "superman" or "superwoman" intensity, allows us to become aware of and enjoy those small moments to ourself, and allows these moments to rise to equal priority with moments of intensity.

I'm not saying one shouldn't strive for something fantastic in their life, or plan big adventures. I'm saying that the time between the intensities of life is just as valuable, if not more so in terms of body repair and mental well-being. We tend to forget that this is important admist all the bombardment of MMA fighting, 200 MPH car races, super-hero blockbusters, acid trips and rock star stadium concerts.

Just take a moment, to have a moment.

Probiotics Change Emotional Responses

probiotics Researchers from UCLA's Geffen School of Medicine have determined that consuming a milk fermented with probiotics changes the brain activity of women. The UCLA medical researchers divided 36 healthy women into three groups. One group was given a milk fermented with probiotics twice a day. Another group was given a milk without the probiotics. The other group was given no milk product.

Before the study began the women underwent extensive brain MRI studies and brain activity tasking response analyses. Then the women consumed the probiotic or placebo milk for four weeks, followed by repeated testing. Along with the MRI testing, the researchers tested brain responses to emotional faces, as well as during rest. They utilized analyses that tests emotional response.

After the four weeks, those women who drank the probiotic milk had significantly different brain activity changes. Their task-related responses increased, and their activity within the sensory cortex regions changed, which was dramatically illustrated during rest periods. Their midbrain connectivity increased, which the researchers concluded probably explained their task-related response increases. Their altered brain activity also illustrated changes in the brain signaling pathways for emotional responses among the women.

The probiotics in the fermented milk included Bifidobacterium animalis, Streptococcus thermophiles, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and Lactococcus lactis. Each of these species has been shown in other clinical studies to improve health among other organs and tissue regions of the body.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: The complexity of the human biome is just starting to be understood, but it is clear that having a good relationship with friendly bacteria and viruses is a key to robust health. Our Plantadophilus probiotic formula is designed for even the most sensitive gut, and derived from plant sources that will help to create a vibrant sense of well-being.

Gratitude is Good for the Heart, Literally

Gratitude It is well known that mental and physical health are closely intertwined, but new data suggests your attitude may have a major influence on your heart attack risk. The latest science reveals that a "grateful heart" is a healthy heart.

Dr. Paul Mills of the University of California San Diego School of Medicine has been researching the connection between mental health and heart health for decades. A positive attitude is associated with lower heart disease risk because it reduces stress, anxiety and depression, all of which contribute to cardiovascular disease.

But what about gratitude and your heart? To answer this question, Mills designed a study. He recruited 186 men and women with heart disease and came up with a gratitude questionnaire. What he learned was, the more grateful people are, the healthier they are. Mills also performed blood tests to measure inflammation levels. Inflammation strongly correlates with the buildup of arterial plaque and the development of heart disease. Interestingly, the most grateful individuals showed the lowest inflammatory markers.

Mills then dug in deeper with a follow-up study involving gratitude journaling. After two months, individuals with a history heart disease who kept gratitude journals enjoyed a decrease in their overall cardiac risk, whereas a non-journaling group did not. Mills isn't certain how gratitude helps the heart but believes the key may be reduced stress. These results aren't surprising in light of previous studies linking negative emotional states with increased risk of heart attack and stroke. A 2012 review of 200 studies by the Harvard School of Public Health concluded that optimism and happiness do indeed reduce cardiovascular risk.

Robert A. Emmons heads up a long-term research project designed to create and disseminate scientific data on the nature of gratitude, its causes and potential consequences for human health and well-being. Neuroscientist Emiliana Simon-Thomas, the science director of Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) at UC Berkeley, works alongside Emmons in the study of gratitude. Simon-Thomas reports:

"After eight weeks of practice, brain scans of individuals who practice gratitude have stronger brain structure for social cognition and empathy, as well as the part of the brain that processes reward."

Simon-Thomas has also seen gratitude relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress and helps individuals with PTSD recover more quickly. Studies involving trauma survivors (Vietnam vets and 9/11) have found gratitude to be a significant factor in healing from trauma.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: We have several mood enhancing formulas that set the stage for feelings and expressions of gratitude. Clean Sweep dissolves away any negative energies in a space including emotions; E-1 addresses anxiety by balancing the hormonal system; and the Meditation Elixirs assist with clearing the blocks to realizing a higher state of being. Gratitude is the attitude!

Good germs we are...

germs Once considered the cause of most disease, "germs" are now increasingly being recognized as essential to our survival and well-being by extending our genetic capabilities with "supra human" powers.

There are deep-seated "mutations" in our genome, some of which do things like limit the production of the active form of folate (a B Vitamin), known as 5-methylenetetrahydrafolate. These defects can have a are associated with a wide range of health problems related to this type of folate deficiency. There is, however, a well known strain of Lactobacillus helviticus found in fermented dairy products that produces the missing folate metabolite for us in our gut. Examples like this show that the microbiome can fill genetic gaps within our bodies, literally plugging holes with "epigenetic glue" in what would otherwise be the sinking ship of the languid adaptability of the human genome.

Moreover, remarkable research last year shows that there is a human strain of bacteria in the microbiome capable of synthesizing vitamin C, essentially challenging the prevailing view that humans are incapable of producing vitamin C. Also last year, a chlorophyll metabolite found in the gut known as pyropheophorbide-a was found to "super charge" our mitochondria in producing the energy enzyme ATP (without the concomitant increase in free radicals), essentially disproving the long-held assumption that humans can not directly harvest sunlight and convert it into metabolic energy like plants; it turns out we can! So many apple carts are being overturned, thanks to our growing awareness of the seeming miraculous capabilities of the microbiome and its metabolites.

Increasingly, research on the microbiome and its ability to extend our genetic/epigenetic capabilities giving us "supra human" powers, such as profoundly enhanced digestion, assimilation, immunity, synthesis of vitamins, is accumulating in the biomedical literature.

The human genome, after all, contains approximately 23,000 protein-coding genes, while the human microbiome contributes about 42,000,000 such genes by the trillions of bacteria and viruses. Together, they exert far more influence via epigenetic mechanisms than the primary sequences in our DNA. The point, of course, is to humble ourselves to the realization that we are more "germ" than "human" as far as both the number, and genetic capabilities, of these microbes.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: We're on the verge of understanding that perhaps the human body's best genius lies in its ability to recruit the bacteria and viruses it needs to adapt to suddenly changing environments. Help it along with our probiotic Plantadophilus formula, and with our E-4 Foundation formula that adds energy to the immune system.

Are you "All In"?

commitment Commitment is a complicated and funny concept. On the one hand it represents strict, unbending discipline. On the other it represents a giving up, or letting go--a turning of one's soul totally over to a belief.

The first definition makes me feel tired. Don't we all feel a commitment to working as hard as we can to make our lives happy? We grit our teeth and grimly set forth on the laborious path to what we believe will create happiness and fulfillment. This brings out the rebel in me. Why not work smart, not hard? Or, maybe it's not a matter of "work" at all?

The second definition of commitment is scary to me. It's the commitment it takes to jump into the abyss; take that leap of faith, or give up all your pre-conceived notions, plans and schemes for success, and let the Universe just provide.

Somewhere in the middle of these two extremes is where most of us dwell for the short years we have on this planet. We beat ourselves up for not "sticking with it"; but then beat ourselves up because we realize we just can't let go and have a little faith in life. All the while, happiness, contentment and fulfillment seem like bubbles in the wind.

abyss I must say, after 60-plus years of wearing myself out working my ass off, instead of achieving a modicum of happiness for my trouble, I instead have realized the utter futility of it. Over my lifetime I've often glanced over at the Second Way longingly wondering if that would be the fruitful path not taken. I even dabbled in it sometimes when the stakes weren't very high, with mixed results.

Now I'm wondering, what if the Universe is just waiting for me to get out of my own way? What if I'm unconsciously blocking the Universe by making all these plans, cooking up all these schemes, and worrying my pretty little head about outcomes. There's a nagging knowing that this is the true reality of my life, that the ego must demonstrate how powerful it is in creating a life for me. But what if that is all just bullshit? What if the doorway to fulfillment and the actualizing of all my grandest wishes and dreams was as simple as just asking for it?

The Universe sometimes has a way of pointing directly at your self-esteem issues when you ask for something. We jump over into planning and working hard to prove to ourselves we're worthy of what we ask for. "Work hard enough, and you can have everything you want." I think this is mostly a lie. Sure, hard work and slavish commitment to an objective is how most of us get stuff we want, but what if that is the "long way 'round"?

Instead, what if it's more a matter of asking for something and then being completely, and committedly willing to do, be or not do and not be whatever comes up in the actualizing of it, and what if doing and being only those ways of joy and ease was the fastest track to bringing your dreams to fruition?

joy and ease In other words, you want the joy and ease in your life that your objective would bring. What if the path to that objective was doing and being that joy and ease right now? All the Universe seems to want to know is, Are you committed to the joy and ease your dreams would bring? Can you truly receive that, or are you awash in doubts and self-defeatism? The Universe is all too willing to let you thrash around in those doubts, otherwise how would you become aware of the alternative?

Say it with me: I hereby COMMIT to the joy and ease the actualization of my dreams would bring, vow to become joy and ease in my life right now, becoming a powerful, shining beacon the Universe cannot miss in bringing me everything grand and wonderful I can imagine, and beyond. Are you ALL IN?

Say HELLO to Your Body with Body Scanning

Body Scan meditation Finally, a good excuse to simply lie down and do nothing! Although, it would be misleading to say that the body scan practice is simply about relaxation. Rather, the aim is to be aware of the different regions of your body, and allow yourself to experience how each part feels, without trying to change anything. Just being with what is there.

In Mindfulness For Dummies, Shamash Alidina describes the body scan as a way to get in touch with the body, let go of feelings of needing to get stuff done, and release pent-up emotions. Just like other forms of meditation, the body scan also trains attention. Alidina says:

The body scan alternates between a wide and narrow focus of attention; from focusing on your little toe all the way through the entire body. The body scan trains your mind to be able to move from detailed attention to a wider and more spacious awareness from one moment to the next.

You can begin the practice by lying on the floor, or a mat, or your bed. Basically, you can begin by focusing your attention at the top of your head and then move down the body, or vice versa. It's good to start with a guided practice to get a sense of how to move your attention up or down the body. Mindfulness for Dummies comes with a practice CD that contains the body scan practice, but there are also some instructional videos available on YouTube.

According to the Mayo Clinic, benefits of Body Scan meditation include a sense of balance and peace, reduced stress, a more positive state of mind and greater self-awareness. Meditation is acknowledged as possibly helping allergies, asthma, cancer, depression and insomnia, among other health conditions. Who would disagree that lying on your back for half an hour a day and checking in with your body in a non-judgmental way could be anything but beneficial?

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Use our Meditation Elixirs to assist in this adventure!

Science Wrapping its Head Around Consciousness

Consciousness affects the world A project that initially started when a student was curious to study the effects of the human mind and intention on the surrounding environment, turned into a rigorous testing lab where Dr. Robert Jahn and his lab assistant spent many hours experimenting to determine whether or not the mind has an affect on our physical world. Jahn and his assistant were able to determine that the human minds' interactions with the machines demonstrated a relationship that was not physical in nature. The mind was able to affect and change outcomes of the machine in ways that were beyond explainable. In essence, consciousness was having an affect over the physical world.

To determine the affects of the minds intention on the physical world, they built several machines called a random number generator. The machine would essentially mimic a coin flip and record the results over time. The machine performed 200 flips per second and produced an average mean of 100 as one would expect. Left unattended, the machine would continue to produce results that suggested a 50/50 chance of producing either heads or tales. The interesting results came when human intention started to interact with the machine. What was once a random 50/50 chance of producing heads or tales began to deviate from expectation as the observer began to intend for the numbers to be higher or lower. While the effects of the mind over the the machines was not large, it was enough that contemporary physics is unable to explain what exactly is happening. Perhaps this is where the quantum world can shed light?

The implications this research could have on humanity is quite fascinating given it could reach into the realms of creating a world of peace, healthy living and joy. If intentions and thoughts can impact something the way it has been demonstrated above, why not explore the boundaries of how far this can go?

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: The objectivity Science attempts to achieve versus the subjective experience we all live in (including the scientists), are really two sides of the same coin. What is not addressed in this supposed "conundrum" is the native knowingness of human consciousness. Knowingness is usually trumped by objective perception, and, in fact, is a part of human socialization practices and customs. By acknowledging and embracing what you know (your "gut", or your "heart"), the world becomes much clearer and your role in it clarified. Use our Zen Meditation Elixir to explore this vital subject.

Neuroplasticity: The new frontier

neuroplasticity New scientific research has shown that the brain continues to produce new neurons and new connections throughout a lifetime. This resets the long-held belief that the "neuroplasticity" of the brain (it's ability to change and transform) ends with childhood.

Your brain's plasticity is controlled by your diet and lifestyle choices, including exercise. Despite what the media tells you, your brain is not "programmed" to shrink and fail as you age. The foods you eat, exercise, emotional states, sleep patterns, and your level of stress—all of these factors influence your brain from one moment to the next.

Any given gene is not in a static "on" or "off" position. You may be a carrier of a gene that never gets expressed, simply because you never supply the required environment to turn it on. As neurologist David Perlmutter explains:

"We interact with our genome every moment of our lives, and we can do so very, very positively. Keeping your blood sugar low is very positive in terms of allowing the genes to express reduced inflammation, which increase the production of life-giving antioxidants. So that's rule number one: You can change your genetic destiny. Rule number two: you can change your genetic destiny to grow new brain cells, specifically in the hippocampus...

Your brain's memory center regenerates. You are constantly growing new brain cells into your 50s, 60s, 80s, and 90s – throughout your lifetime – through a process called neurogenesis. That said, these two ideas come together because you can turn on your genes through lifestyle choices that enhance neurogenesis and that enhance regrowth of cells and expansion of your brain's memory center. This was proven by researchers recently. They demonstrated that there are factors under our control that can make that happen."

Recent science has shown that physical exercise is as important as mental exercise when it comes to keeping your mind fit. A number of studies show that exercise can promote growth of new brain cells, enlarge your memory center, improve IQ scores, and help prevent brain deterioration as you age.

One study found that one 20-minute weight training session improved memory. In a year-long study, individuals who exercised were actually growing and expanding their brain's memory center one to two percent per year, whereas typically that center would have continued to decline in size. Strength training, especially high-intensity interval training (HIIT), is especially beneficial for boosting long-term memory and reducing your risk for dementia.

Exercise prompts nerve cells to release one growth factor in particular, called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF triggers numerous other chemicals that promote neural health and directly benefit cognitive functions, including learning. Fasting also triggers BDNF, and exercising while fasting can go a long way toward keeping your brain and muscles biologically young.

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Similar research was conducted by Dr. Yury Kronn in his development of E-Formulas. In fact, the E-1 formula has been clinically shown to significantly affect the parasympathetic nervous system by balancing and harmonizing it, allowing for greater brain and nervous system plasticity (as shown by heart rate variability studies).
